e8400 oc help

ok ima noob been reading bout this so now ima try to see if i can get this right.

first off
mobo ASUS P5Q PRO 1600/1333 FSB
cpu E8400 3.0GHZ 1333 FSB
ram G SKILL DDR2 800 5-5-5-15 TIMINGS 4 x 2GIG FOR A TOTAL OF 8

ok i want to oc my cpu 3.6 - 4.0 now if i can get thi equation right which really stumps me but here goes you take the total speed of the cpu which is 3000 and divide by the cpu multiplyer which is 9 and that gives you 333 and you take that and multiply by 2 to get 666. ah heck i know this is so wrong i tired tho. ok anyhow the p5q pro has very good oc option and i heard people oc there e8400 using stock volts. ok back on topic now to oc to 3.6 im gonna need ddr2 800 - 1066 right? where do i put the ram into the equation. sigh i researched and researched i just cant find a noobish guide for doing this. please help me. also please please please list how to figure out how much ram or fsb you need for oc ing this things with a noob terms in it. thanks alot!! again i googled and googled and read topics and topics just cant put into words without really understanding what everything means. THANKS

3.6 will need 400 fsb which you bump up from 333 - then your ram will be running at 800Mhz cause its double data rated

EDIT: the cpu will read 1600 rated FSB which apparently is quad pumped which no one has explained why yet

you can always overclock your ram beyond 400 fsb (800Mhz) say if you took your fsb to 450 when you double that its 900Mhz which is beyond the stated timings and rated speed of the ram you bought. You can hit that memory speed if you loosen your memory timings. I'm guessing you'll have to use 5.5.5.15 or something like that.

As far as the mobo is concerned, i'm still to this day confused if that is the max rated FSB speed or max cpu support.

well the ram timings are 5-5-5-15 so id assume thats a good timing. so what do you think i would be able to oc the e8400 to with this setup?

Honestly, it really is a crap shoot. I seem fortunate with my 8400 (see sig) on those volts. I've never clocked it any faster. I will try once I get a H20 loop for it, but as my 24/7 daily use, there is really no further need than 3.6

Again, its a crap shoot, but i feel confident in saying you will be able to hit 3.6 with it. Don't forget to get a better cooler for it. IF you don't and overclock it before you get one, WATCH the temps. Its a must.

maybe its this and its just my theory: dual channel memory combined with double data rate? who knows, it makes no sense and means nothing at all

2. increase (+ key) FSB to 400

3. VERY IMPORTANT check the DRAM speed and re-set it to 800.

Reboot.

That's really all there is to it.

I have the same setup and can do 3.6 easily, but temps are a bit too hot with the stock cooler for my tastes, so I use 3.2Ghz (355 fsb, dram at 1068, rated for 1066 though).

In 3dmark06 the difference between 3.6 and 3.2 is a whopping 400 3dmarks (13.9 vs 13.5). Not worth the +10c in heat IMO.

OK - here's my stab at it but I could be COMPLETELY wrong

Actual FSB is "rated" FSB divided by 4, because this CPU/motherboard architecture is quad pumping, i.e. four data transfers per clock cycle. Hence puts through an amount of data equivalent to a FSB 4 times as fast which does a single transfer per clock cycle.

The multiplier is the ratio that the CPU is running internally relative to the true FSB speed, so your E8400 is clicking 9 cycles for every cycle of the FSB, which would then be 9/4 the rated FSB. I think.

Bottom line, the 1333 is the rated FSB because it sounds simpler to put that on the box than "333 quad pumped" - either way you're getting 1333 million data transfer operations/second

That's correct, it's quad-pumped (x4)

333 FSB x 4 = 1333 effective FSB

333 x 6 = 2000 (idle speed step) or
333 x 9 = 3000 (load)

400 x4 = 1600 effective FSB

400 x6 = 2400 idle
400 x9 = 3600 load

(I would also disable C1E Support under CPU Configuration.)

Save and Reboot.

3.6 GHz should be like taking candy from a baby.You have a good system there. Have fun!

And NO... Do NOT set your CPU volts too high. In fact, leave it at the default. You should be able to get 3.6 GHz on stock voltage.
