e8400 Higher temps than expected

While I know they're not dangerous, my e8400 idles at roughly 44C and is about 50-55 under load. I have a core contact freezer, and I think these temps are much higher than they should be. Is it likely that I didn't include enough thermal grease with the heat sink?

My e8400 with a Zalman CNPS 9700 LED with the fan set medium level to keep the noise down idles at about 27-29C in a Sonata III case that also house a Visiontek HD4850. Maybe your motherboard is reporting the temps incorreclty or you don't have a decent heatsink/fan setup.

Are those RealTemp or CoreTemp temperatures? If they are being reported by other programs, then they're surely wrong.

error8 which is the best? In realtemp without any calibration I get 24/26 idle 34/36 load. I really want to believe realtemp; anyways I'm running my e8400 @ 3.6 with xigmatek s1283.

RealTemp is reporting the same values as CoreTemp, they just use different T junction values, the first one has 95 C the second one 105 C, so yeah, you can believe RealTemp if you like. ;)

Also, the idle temperature is not "real", you have to do the calibration stated on the RealTemp site and even then it's still not too accurate.

coretemp has me at 47 and realtemp has me at 37 haha either way I guess I'll just remount. How should I grease this bad boy up this time? I'm thinking I'll just fill in the areas where the pipes cross the aluminum so it's all flat and even.

i have my e8500 running at 4ghz(422x9.5) the temp recorded by realtemp at idle is 36 and full load is 54-58.i am using a thermalright ultra 120 exetreme with 2x noctua NF-P12 fan in a push-pull setup.the temp. i mentioned was recorded when my room temp. is at 28c.i have noticed that no matter how low my room temp. goes, the idle of 36c will not drop any further.(my room temp can go as low as 21c with air-conditioning):)

so i guess the idle temp isn't really accurate.

I completely rewired the case with much better wire management, reseated the heatsink, and my results are the same or worse. What gives? This makes no sense. I used less than half the paste I used in the first attempt.

Yeah I tried again with the same results. It's definitely out of my control. I think the sensors might be reporting wrong or something. I highly doubt my 4870 would run cooler than my processor.

I have an E8400 overclocked to 3.62Ghz, and I bought a Zalman CNPS9500 HSF for it. It idles at around 43 Celsius, and on 100% load, it goes up to 54. For the record, I use RealTemp (my bios reports the same as well).

I think it's interesting how people have mixed opinions on this. Some people keep saying, "check to see if the HSF is mounted properly, maybe get another case fan, blah blah blah" and others say "It's perfectly fine. Don't worry." I guess it's not one of those cases when you can exactly get a solid answer.

I would like to know though: For a dual-core processor that's running at 3.6 Ghz, are the above temperatures expected/satisfactory? I have been told that as long as it doesn't get over 60 it's fine, but if it sits at around 43 on a regular basis, is that going to shorten the life of my CPU to any considerable extent? I know this is a lot of questions but I think it would be nice if someone could provide some reassurance on this matter. Thanks.
