E8400/E3110 what's your VID?

peppie how are your temps so low when only using a zalman 9700. I have a Antec 900 as well but I have a Tuniq 120 on my proc and it idles at 40c loads at 60c???

My first one out of the box said 1.0875 (e3110). But for some reason the P35-DSR3 set it to 1.188 default (why auto pick that high?). I lowered it to 1.16875 (after much crashing from 1.09-1.13 @ 3.6ghz) which actually shows in the bios/cpuz as 1.140/1.156 (it bounces around in there) and overclocked it out of the box to 3.6ghz. An Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro is keeping it under 51C if speedfan is to be believed. Bios just sat at 40-41 depending on fan speed as I just sat there for 15min or so to see what would happen at 3.6ghz. I think I have one more volt step down as I just got tired of crapping out of one or the other prime instance tests and bumped 3 notches to end it all. I mean if the chip ran fine at 1.188 @ 3ghz @54c in Speedfan, I have no problem with 3.6ghz at 1.15v and a lower 51C (even if it lies, it was lower). I think this chip rocks! Unfortunately this is my dads...ROFL. I'll go a bit further and report back if it changes much (or if I go higher because prime dies tonight). I'll be testing my own 3110 this weekend I hope. It's here, just trying to get dad's squared away before I stick it in his PC (same parts as mine but EP35-DS3R going in it replacing his AMD and already has a better psu in his with 1% regulation). I had to steal his cooler (freezer 7) waiting for my koolance Intel adapter so I figured I'd test his also. I actually think the E4300 heatsink I have would be fine at 3.6 on this chip. The xeon fan is puny compared to it and was expected to work at default (which was hotter than me at 3.6ghz with less volts). Prime solid for 5 hrs now 100% large FFT torture. One more, cpuz dips from 1.20v to 1.104v @ load bouncing back and forth while it starts on desktop at 1.14 (showing 1.12 here and there).

This chip is 1/16/08 pack date and batch Q746A534. My other one is a Q746A545 2/6/08

Oh other thoughts: The freezer was running @2750rpm or so at 1.188@3ghz. Since lowering and overlocking to 3.6ghz as noted above the RPM never goes above 2440 or so. Also while not annoying the Freezer was quite audible at top speed (deep hum, not high pitch). Box says top is 2500rpm, but mine hits 2700+ (my 12v is a bit high though on this psu, maybe thats why it goes higher - too tired to figure it out and I've been scribbling numbers on/off for 6 hours with this thing...LOL). Also speedfan appears to be about a few C's higher than my bios just sitting on desktop (0-1% load...heh) vs sitting in bios fan showing same speed in both cases (around 1500rpm depending on my volts). OCforums lays out how to fine tune it for your specific cpu but I'm too lazy tonight and it's my dads anyway 🙂 Fan is set to PWM. Very impressed with this Freezer Pro 7 for the money. Half thinking of keeping it, ordering another for dad and just not doing water until I want 4ghz+. Then again my chip could just completely suck tomorrow and I'd need water now. I didn't need the water with my 4300@3ghz (it was pretty cool). Food for thought.

@Peppie we have the same OS Boot drive, Video card and Crucial Ballistix (2GB for me for testing - I'll switch to 8GB Adata later this week once stable)...Great minds think alike 🙂 I know the 2GB is better stuff but 8GB Adata was so cheap I couldn't help it. $120 @ Newegg. Who could pass that up?
[EDIT] No overvolting of anything (not FSB, MCH etc...all auto). Might change with 8GB (4 dimms) though 🙂

Arctic freezer pro 7 hitting 3850, zalman only 3830mhz. He has higher volts but less temps? It would of course depend on his monitoring tool of choice. I got different temps from bios, Speedfan, Coretemp etc. None of them jived so I just went with one to stay consistent between my two chips...I can't compare them if I'm bouncing all around between software. I don't know how you could hit 17-18C less than me with quite a bit more volts at 3.6. Maybe his volts are being reported really high? I would expect that temp from something like 1.05v @ 3.6 or so. Maybe he isn't reporting his load volts? My load volts are far lower than idle quite a vdroop I guess (but with that psu? 3% reg, probably less really).

My bios never reported under 37C even at 1.08 but fan slowed down. Maybe he's maxing it all day turning off smartfan etc...🙂. Can't believe that with a silencer psu and the MSI card. It's cooling solution is almost silent for me...huge heatsink/large fan (it was going to be called Zilent early on). I guessing he hates noise too 🙂

I am a little unhappy with my E8400..The VID is super low but it needs a ton of volts at 3.9-4.0 I get 4.0 Stable at 1.4 Vdroop actual in CPUZ which terrifies me. I am now a 3.9 at 1.36 loaded. I can boot into 4.4 and run 3dmarks and games but prime errors out quickly. I have 7 more days to decide to exchange or not. decisions decisions.

1.0375 is my VID. Do you guys think 1.45 is gonna blow the chip up in less than a year? Thats what I would need to do 4.2ish.
 
jaredpace, Guess I am hot natured. I am fortunate to have a room at the end of my house, with no Heat vents. Open walk in area on opposing ends. Air just circulates naturally to be comfortable, for me, but it doesn't get Cold. Also Case is in the corner, on the floor, where it's even cooler.

Core Temp and HWmonitor show CPU Temp at idle of 42 and GPU at 38, CPU temp seems a little high at idle, but then the Artic Silver was just applied. Hasn't broken in yet. May have wished I lapped CPU and 9700, but didn't want to break the warranty yet.

get the OC done and stable, will put the other 2 Gb of memory in.

Memtest and Prime95 tests No Errors. Going to try to install EasyTune to see if I can get a accurate CPU Temp Reading. Tried another program, it read 30, which seems about right to me. When I was running Prime95 tests, Temp never went above 46 , but wasn't doing 100% load on both CPUs.

Adding in the last 2 sticks of memory for 4gb total. Then will ramp back up the settings.

Think I figured Temp Issue out, Used Speedfan 4.33 and figured out which HWmonitor reading was actually the CPU, ITE IT87, TMPIN1 was CPU, TMPIN0 was the case. I feel better at idle both read 19 C, and both CPUs at 100% Load, never got above 33 C.

Installed EasyTune 5 Pro. It is reading the BIOS PC Health TEMP data. Which matches Speedfan 4.33 and HWmonitor. Guess that is about as good as I can rely on for now.

Have all 4Gb memory running now. Just need to tweak it up closer to 1066 it's rated at.

Got the 4Gb at 1066.
Using Realtemp 2.24, the Tjmax=95.
100% Load for 15 mins shows 33C.

I think 1.45 is dangerous with these chips. Anandtech said the same and even commented Intel says this is the limit. That's too close for comfort for me. I'm thinking if you can't get there on 1.4 or less you either need to cool it more or just back off for 24/7 running (personally I want to run 1.36 or less since Intel could actually ship one with that volt...so you know its safe). What does it take for you to run 3.6ghz rock solid? Your vid looks better than mine originally, I would have thought that should have been a pretty good chip. But as always, it's a crap shoot 🙂

1.45v in bios or 1.45v real after droop? I didn't see that much of a heat increase from 1.4 to 1.45v in bios when I was trying to get stable above 4ghz. Maybe 1 or 2C at idle and 2 or 3C at load.
 
I dont notice that big of temp jump at all from 1.3 to 1.45. My lapped Tuniq and good airflow in my case-along with winter-keep my chip really cool. I get 52-54 in real temp at small FFTs load prime. 1.35 and below it maxes out in the 40s. I checked and my chip surface was the flattest ive gotten in 2-4 years. Right now im running it at 1.36 in windows checking with CPUZ with prime load. I can get another 200 mhz bringing it up to 1.41ish but 4.4 needs 1.45ish to be 15 min prime stable. I am close to just keeping this think since a tear down would suck at the moment. Has anyone seen any data that comments on voltage on these chips other the AT review.
 
guys i really think vid is dependant on multi.

If you lower your multi, i think the Vid goes down as well. Well thats what im seeing right now.

tell me why my E3110 fails at OC's.

Tried 500x7, 8 and 9 at up to 1.35v and get nothing. Backed it down to 475 and tried the same, nothing, 450 nope, 425 nope, 400 nope, 350 NOPE!?! I booted in at 333 or a measly 3.0GHz. Yep, stock. FAIL!

Gillbot, what motherboard and setting are you using ? I can;t believe you can;t run over stock.....

We need Board, PSU, Ram. We got the cpu.

If you have a board that i or mark has, we can read off our settings and see if you can get it working at least. then you can fine tune.

Im guessing northbridge voltage at this moment. Of you got a overheating mosfet.
 
MSI Neo2-FR with a Freezer Pro 7 heatsink, I tried so many voltages, multis, ram dividers and FSB's that I can't even see straight. Though I had the same exact issue with my E6550 at first though it was a ram problem, unless my Firestix are starting to take a crap on me.

I suspect I need to take a step back and let the chip relax though. I went right for 500fsb x 9 and that was a flop. It seems as though once I hit a dud OC, everything I try right after doesn't like to work well. Maybe I need to build to a better OC.

I used similar settings that it took to get my E6550 to 500fsb though they didn't pan out. My rig info is in sig also, or see here: http://www.anandtech.com/mysystemrig.aspx?rigid=35148
 
I would try the same settings that the E6550 used, but try 8 x 450 fsb on the first shot ! Also, crank the vcore the 1.35 (should be safe) for the first try.

I got it booted @ 400fsb x 9 though I don't think it's stable. Took my ram back to 2.1v, (though it only needed 2.0v to run 500fsb before) and vcore is 1.2 volts.

I changed so many settings though i'm not sure what did it. I guess i'll have to play some more and see if I can't get that elusive 4GHz because to me if I don't hit at LEAST 4G, this chip is a failure.
 
gave it more vcore to 1.35v and booted in at 445 x 9, failed orthos after 1 minute.

vcore 1.35v
mem 2.1v
vtt fsb 1.325v
nb 1.425v
sb io pwr 1.7v
sb core pwr 1.15v

these are a bit higher than what it took my E6550 to get 3.5g stable.
