e8400 at stock voltages

Anyone able to just run the FSB at 400 (with PC-6400 ram) and live happily overclocked at 3.6ghz with stock settings? Or are there other settings on an Asus P5Q-E that should be changed for this minor overclock goal? I know I will run a stress test overnight to verify, but I want to check into what everyone is doing for running their e8400 at this speed.

I just received a E8400 with my GA-EP35-DS3L and it will not overclock correctly at stock voltage using my Corsair DDR2 800 (PC-6400) ram. Maybe it's the fact I'm using a stock cooler?

How hot are you running? It's not a temperature issue unless you're riding real close to TJMax. Run RealTemp or CoreTemp and check. The fact that you're at stock voltage makes a temperature issue somewhat unlikely.

My guess is that you have some of the power saving features on that board enabled. I forget what the labels are in the BIOS, but there are a couple of optional features there that will lower your voltage and your clock speed during periods of low activity. Turn these off and your problems should go away.

So you are saying it won't oc on stock volts.

Well.. errr.. try changing them?!?! Or am I missing something.

Do you mean you are set on auto and it won't oc? I don't have the p5b but a p5n-t deluxe and auto was not good for oc'ing.

Set it to auto and standard settings.. check the volts and then set it to just under that on manual. Now start playing with them to see what works. -volts.. see if it works.. shave a bit off rinse and repeat. Find a decent min setting for 3ghz and then start upping the fsb until unstable.. then give it a few more volts.

Using CoreTemp running Prime95 on stock voltages TjMax 105C and 100% load each core is about 62/63C.

I do have C1E enabled as one other, maybe I'll try that later. I think my core temps just might be too high, I read some posts that no one wants their temps higher then 70C, but I guess I still have a lot of leeway.

I'm running an E8400 @ 3.6GHz on a GA-EP45-DS3L with all stock voltages. Memory is Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4 2x1GB. Very stable with no problems at all...

Do you have:
CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)
CPU Thermal Monitor 2 (TM2)
CPU EIST Function

enabled? I guess I should turn those all off and then try to o/c on stock again..... making sure to put my RAM multiplier to 2 so it's 800.

And stock voltage is 1.225 right?

After rereading the overclocking faq I see disable C1E at first and enable after stable.

Temperature's not your problem at 63C. It's a little hot, but it's certainly not making your system unstable.

Also check your ram voltage. If you're running auto or 5-5-5-15 at 1:1 you'll probably be fine with stock 1.8v, but if you're trying 4-4-4-15 (and especially 4-4-4-12) I'd suggest you bump it to 2.0v or even 2.1v.

Well hmm I came home, disabled C1E and disabled ESIT and kept the ram the same at 5-5-5-18. I got it to boot to 3.6GHz upping the VCore a couple over the stock, but the second I ran Prime95 it stopped.

Up the VCore some more, then :) Not all chips are the same - while some people may be able to run their chips at 3.6GHz on stock voltage, this may not be the case for you. Just be smart about it. Anything under 1.4v should be safe, but you shouldn't need anywhere near that to hit 3.6GHz.

I have all of the above on, plus C2E and C4E (whatever they do).

Stock VID for this chip is 1.225. BIOS is set to NORMAL, which puts it at that voltage. In CPU-Z it comes up 1.184v.

Memory SPD is 5-5-5-18 @ 1.8v. BIOS is set to AUTO, which puts it at that voltage. In SpeedFan it comes up 1.87v.

My previous board was a GA-P35-DS3L with the F8F bios. This E8400 ran at the same speeds and voltages on it.

----------------

To start out just disable any CPU energy saving options (EIST, C1E) and CPU optimizations (No execute, VT) and enable TM2.

Set your voltages (CPU, MCH, FSB) to AUTO, memory voltages to 1.90v and your memory timings to AUTO. The DS3L should read out the 5-5-5-18 out of SPD.

The motherboard should run the CPU at around 1.28v on AUTO (figure from CPU-Z). If stable in Prime95, you can try lowering the voltage from there...

I've got an E8400 and GA-EP35-DS3R, processor is at 3.6 (400x9) RAM is 1:1, but it won't boot up at stock voltage. I am Prime95/OCCT stable @ 1.28V though, RAM is at 1.8V.

I left everything in the BIOS set to whatever it is at default, just changed the FSB to 400 and manually set the RAM for 1:1.

OK, I finally got back to trying this and the even at 1.3V it still isn't stable. In CPU-Z it only shows a core voltage 1.264V though and shows a bus speed of 400MHz but a Rated FSB of 1600MHz. At 1.3V it was getting up to 67C for a bit before Prime95 failed.

I do have a stable overclock @ 375MHz bus speed so 3.375GHz, CPU-Z only shows 1.184 but I know I put it manually to 1.2325 or something that like, one above 1.225 (the default), this comes to ~63C.

Edit: Nevermind, it stopped after about 15 minutes of Prime95....
