E6850/680i temp help?

Just built this system:

CPU: E6850 3.0 GHz 4MB 1333 MHz
MB: EVGA 122-CK-NF68-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX
Video: EVGA 768-P2-N831-AR GeForce 8800GTX 768MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP
PS: CORSAIR CMPSU-620HX ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 620W
Memory: (4G) 2 x Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model BL2KIT12864AL804
HD1 OS/Apps: Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150
part1: winxp 15G (OS plus misc)
part2: Vista64 25G (OS plus misc)
part3: Games 90G (figure 10 gig a game max, that's 9 games at a time... hehe)
part4: Apps 20G (10gig per OS, I usually burn 4-5gig for apps max, so that's double for both, should be fine)

CPU BIOS idle temps are: 41 or 45 with the front door shut on the P182
Board: 36-40
MCP: 47-50 (stock fan at 50%)

This seems kind of high to me. I have a couple very quiet AMD 4000+ systems, and the CPU and Board idle in the BIOS are around 41, so I don't know.

That does seem high. Are all your fans running? I have noticed that with the S-FLEX because they can be so quiet, you can easily not notice if one or more are not running.

I have a E6600 overclocked to 3.0GHz and I only get 25-27C idle temps. I have a Tuniq Tower with the Scyth S-FLEX SFF21F for the CPU, and 4 more for the case. The CPU fan is controlled by the motherboard (a Gigabyte GA-N680SLI-DQ6 Rev1, which is a 680i SLI motherboard), the others are on a fan controller and run at 1000RPM (still below my noise floor in the room). The south bridge is at 43-46C (peeks at 52C), and the north bridge is in the 34-37C range. I have a Lian-Li PC-201B case.

What are you using to test your temps?

Well, I learned the BIOS test adds a load to the CPU. I downloaded TAT and sure enough, both cores in the low 20's! When I apply the software full load test they both go in to the 40's, same as the BIOS reading. Sound correct?

i believe all of the core-temp reading programs need a revision for the G0 steppings b/c low 20's should be ambient/sub-ambient temperatures, which is impossible on air and most water systems (unless you are running TEC water, chillers, or phase). so low 20's is incorrect and 40's seems too high. unless you seated the Ultra120 wrong, or it is convex like a lot of them are. you should lap the Ultra120 and the E6850.

Hmmm... I think the HS is on correctly. Are sure ITAT is not working with E6850s? What other app should I try?

It just seems odd, load in TAT = BIOS score( mid 40's). 25 and 27 (core 1 and core 2) idle in TAT.

ummm... 72 degrees Fahrenheit = 22C, so seeing 23-24 is not out of the ordinary on the big coolers like the Tuniq Tower and the Ultra-120 eXtreme. Just look at Anandtech's own tests on these heatsinks:

Idle Tuniq Tower (stock fan) 2.93GHz overclock: 27C
Idle Ultra-120 eXtreme (S-FLEX) 2.93GHz overclock: 26C

They also don't have the ambient listed in that slide, although I know they have it somewhere in one of their reviews when they started the last push of heatsink reviews. My ambient is around 19-20C, so my 23C isn't out of the ordinary.
