E6800 or Q6600 Question

All,

I have a E6800 and a Q6600 chip. I was wondering which would be the bigger improvement for me?

Now, I know that the Q6600 has 4 cores to the 2 cores in the E6800, but understanding that the games I play today do not take advantage of multiple cores, I am trying to make the decision as to which to go with.

I'm struggling, because I know that I can get the E6800 to 3.6ghz on air, and the best I can do with the Q6600 is maybe 3.2ghz on air.

EDIT: Will also add my machine specs here:

eVGA 680i SLI Motherboard
nVidia 9800GX2
4gb RAM
Windows XP SP3 and Vista 64 bit (dual boot)

So, anyone have any thoughts? Am I better off with the E6800 or the Q6600?

Thanks.

You need to be a little bit more specific about the intended uses of the machine. Honestly though, either chip running at 3.2GHz will handle pretty much anything you throw at it these days. If you don't have an application that uses the extra cores of the Q6600 I would go with the E6800.

Sorry, I was a bit vague.

Really, all I use this machine for is gaming. I've read that the E6800's can get up to 3.6ghz on air, is that not the case?

E6800?

i think you mean X6800?

And why are you even looking at a 65nm dual core?

E8500 when it comes out, or E8400 now.

If your on a budget E7200 isnt that bad.

The X6800 isnt cheap. It being a Extreme Edition processor, and its very out dated.

the 680 is the most saddest motherboard i have ever used on a quadcore. I went though 4 of them b4 i upgraded to the even more sorrier 780i.

Stick with dualcore on that board. The quad will make you cry.

I think he probably means the E6850. And yeah, E6850's will usually do 3.5-3.8 Ghz, if you use a good heatsink and know how to overclock.

E8500 when it comes out, or E8400 now.

E8500's are already for sale. Newegg has had them for a few weeks now.

You are correct, it is the E6850.. The reason I am going with that chip is because it is what is in my other computer that is no longer being used.

Can you point me to a good tutorial to get to the 3.6 - 3.8 range?

Thanks!

I wasn't saying the E6850 can't make it to 3.6, just that at 3.2 it's pretty damn fast anyway. Since all you're doing is gaming, I'd stick with the dual core.

NONONONONONONONONO

The E6850 is cow dookie compared to the E7200.

Expecially if your overclocking.

The E7200 will RUN CIRCLES around the E6850 overclocked.

Grab the E7200 or E7300.

Or grab the E8400 or E8500 <--- these guys naturally have a 10% clock per clock advantage over the E6850.

Is your board not compatible with 45nm techology?

Why are you going for older technology when C2D in general is getting phased out this year?

Aigo, he's saying he already has the E6850 and the Q6600 and asking which to use for his gaming computer.

LOL...

okey so you have both?

Then definitely the dualcore. Cuz the 680i is crap on quadcores. :p
