@MaDMvD - Did you check the CPU fan speed with Speedfan to see if it changes (at idle and at load) between F8 and F9. I can't think of anything else that would cause the discrepancy......Also did TJunction stay the same in CoreTemp ? Can't see why that would change and you'd expect that to make more of a difference if it did.....Seems bizarre....

Yes, I checked all three programs with each BIOS revision. Using F8 BIOS, every program reported higher temps, whereas they all reported lower temps when using F9. The TJunction remained at 100C in CoreTemp too. In other news, I just put in my CNPS9700 and I now idle at 31C @ 3.6GHz! Quick Orthos stress test went to 51C.
Good News !! Those temps seems pretty good now. Using an AC7 Pro, I get Idle temps of about 31C and load of about 56C @3.552GHz, so I reckon you're good to go 🙂
Talking about temps, I've been testing my replacement ballistix using memTest86+, particularly test 5 which is the one that seems to cause most problems. I noticed that my NB which normally only gets warm even when running Orthos gets pretty hot running memTest86+ test 5. I reckon I could cook my breakfast on it :Q The RAM modules get pretty toasty too. I've bought a Corsair Dominator Airflow fan for the RAM, not sure how much difference that'll make......

I enjoyed reviewing your test data - very thorough, and thank you. Suggest you make yourself a sig so we know what you're running all this on. Those temps are pretty fantastic with that 1:1 O/C to 3.6GHz. You must be very happy with the 9700. Can you elaborate on it a little for me? Specifically, amy issues fitting it to your mobo? Fan oriented to back of the case? And would you consider it a "quiet" heatsink at idle. I like a little bit of quiet bling, you see. One day, someone's going to get hands on definitive about the Zerotherm Nirvana - the heatsink I really have my eye on for future upgrades. My heatsink is a middle of the roader - an Akasa Evo Blue/ Rosewill Z3. It's pretty quiet, reasonably efficient, fits the ga-p35c-ds3r perfectly, and in my windowed case, one of the better looking solutions. I tend to idle at 35-38 and stressed, at 57-60. All perfectly good temps, but it demonstrates the difference between mid-level heatsinks, and the tier 1's - 3-4C temp drops. When I get the upgrade bug, it will be the cooler - not because it's holding me back re: O/C, but because, well, many of us can't leave well enough alone.
Back to the Nirvana - my concern is fitting it to my mobo in the proper orientation. Issue is mem slots - I run Corsair dominators, slots one and three, and some pics I've seen make it seem as if the Nirvana might actually hang over slot one memory. Glad you had no issues with the 9700 on the p35-ds3r. Oh, is that the 9700NT - gunmetal PWN, or what...

3: I have a Scythe Infinity 😉 - Quiet: Yes, I was having 64 as maximum temp over a 12 hour orthos test without any fans! (Of course the above results were with fans)
4: The motherboard itself is great for me. I upgraded from an A8N-SLI/Opteron 170/2GB DDR PC3200 to GA-P35-DS3R/E6750/Kingston PC6400 CL4 didn't even require an OS reinstall. The only thing that I don't like is that if it fails to boot with a certain overclock everything resets so you have to lock the PCI etc. again.
Today my new Ram arrived, And I am running 5:6 now. I am going to try a reboot now, to see if i can get a higher ratio.

i rebooted my pc to see the timings settings. The ratios are 2.0 - 2.4 - 3.2, which is to high for PC6400 ram so;
New Settings
Time for another reboot, I want 3.8 not 3.79 lol
Once i found out how to get our videocamera to send it's data to my PC, i'll record a fanless boot for you (without PC case then).

Fitment is perfect on my P35-DS3R, and leaves plenty of space for components. I would definitely consider the 9700 a quiet heatsink overall. Granted, my 3 other case fans and 4 HDDs kind of drown out everything else, but it seems to be very quiet at idle. When I turn up the FanMate2 controller to max, I do hear a slight whine, but it's nothing unbearable - I can definitely live with it. To my surprise, the temps I posted above were from when the FanMate2 wasn't working right/stuck on idle. After I disabled the automatic fan control in BIOS, I was able to see even lower temperatures. At night, I saw idle temps of 27-28C and 43-44C load. Unfortunately, I am unable to run Orthos for more than a few seconds at 3.6GHz. I tried many things last night, but nothing seemed to stabilize it. I loaded the default 2.66GHz settings and it ran fine, so obviously it is related to the OC. The thing is, everything seems stable except for Orthos. However, when I run Orthos, I sometimes get the "uncorrectable hardware error" BSOD - particularly when testing using the Gromacs stress test. I guess I'll have to do some more tweaking over the weekend.

well shoot...if the room temp is 20 degrees celcius that EXPLAINS IT!!, that makes a huge difference. i have 5 120mm fans and an antec vga cooler blowing air into my case and a scythe ninja(big ass heatsick). don't even need to lap anything...you room temp is making most of the difference. usually is about 30C in my office. when it's about 25c i've seen my core idle at 31C.

post some pictures of your custom mounting systems along with instructions, i'm sure people would appreciate that. i agree that intel's mounting is flimsy.
what TIM are you applying between you cpu and heat sink?
it's that Vcore you list on your signature what's in speedfan vcore1 or in cpu-z or what you set it at in bios???
