E6750 Finally Arrived!

Alright, I'm using the laptop to let you guys know that my e6750 is finally here. I set it up no problem and just installed windows. Hmmmm, should I get some sleep or just start overclocking now...

It takes less time to do a quick overclocking than to install Windows. How can you not overclock it if you've been waiting for Windows to finish installation? 😛

well, there's a little more to it. I had to get something now instead of waiting for a g0 Q6600 b/c my wife's file server is down and out. We have 120 gb of pics and vids from the first 16 mos of my daughter's life. I cannot find that 120 gb any more. I went from xp pro on my old installation to xp home now. Could that be the problem or is something more sinister afoot? I have a backup drive in my old computer but it had some bad sectors last time I checked and seems to be on the way out. To complicate matters, my 500 gb drive that has all the pics/vids on it is showing up as a good drive but also only shows that it is a 128 gb drive. WTF???

ok, nothing exciting so far. I'm still installing updates and am only at 3 ghz. tried twice to boot at 425x8 at stock voltage with no luck.

Go Baby! Go!

btw, I slipstreamed SP2 and then burned a new XP cd with all of the current updates on it. That wasy it will be a faster install.

well, I had some probs at 420. I went to lunch for a couple hours, returned home to an unstable computer 🙁 . had to reset cmos after 45 min of tinkering. I tried 440x6 with no success, so it looks like the fsb is the problem. I'll increase the nb voltage and keep the x6 multiplier for now to find my max fsb. BTW, ram is fine at least up to 1110, so I can't blame that either.

sorry marc, I missed that before. antec p900 case with just the 3 x 120 and 1 x 200 fans. tuniq tower cpu cooler. core temp is still showing 16c idle and 29c load right now at 8x400. the abit guru software is showing about 15c higher which I believe is accurate, but I have had some stability issues when using that so I'm going to disable it for now.

are you doing 1:1 or another divider on that board (i assume it's the ip35 in your sig)?

i do:

MCH: 1.52
VTT: 1.31
ICH: 1.05
ICHIO: 1.65
leave GTLREF @ 67%

this is good for 420 mhz fsb and mem at 525 (4:5 divider) (i'm running 9x420)

you shouldn't need more than 1.52 even for 460-ish.

yeah, well, I was shooting for 500x8 but that seems to be a long way off right now. I just failed orthos after 6 minutes 8x400, looks like it's time to bump up some voltages...

marc, strangely enough, my other hd magically showed up with all of my baby pics/vids after I installed sp2. I probably would be a statistic right now if I hadn't found them...

ok, I cranked up the tuniq to 95% and passed orthos 15 min now at 8x400. I have case fans on low with case closed, I'll up them to medium and try a little higher.

if i were you, i'd keep all those vids and such on an external if they're that important. overclocking presents a possible risk, and even if you know exactly what you're doing, with data that important i've found that you can't be too careful. i've had stuff go bad from an unstable overclock, so in my experience it's not worth the risk. back that up! leave the external unplugged until you need it or until you get that overclock 100% rock solid.

yes, sig is updated as of last night with my new rig. Are you on an e6850? I didn't think I'd need the extra 1x but now I'm not so sure...

ok, I'm using 4:5 divider at 8x420 now. turned case fans to medium and voltages as recommended. I had the case in one of those extremely restrictive desks with little clearance on either side and about 9 inches above case and back of case close to the wall. Just moved case out so that it's next to desk with much better airflow. idle temp down 3c even at 8x420.. 🙂 orthos was at 34c (figure 49c after adding the standard 15) before, let's see what it does now.

great. I'm now at 8x430. had to bump up to 1.46 v to get there, however. 1.44 failed orthos in 25 secs. I bumped mch to 1.56, too. mem is set to 1:1 so it's not a factor. Is this a bad board? A bad chip? Or a bad overclocker?

I doubt you can do 8x500fsb on air. I think you're going to need watercooling for that. Most likely you are at your chip's max.

I put up a big post regarding my OCing experiences with the E6750 here:

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2076349&enterthread=y

In summay, my max FSB was 515 with Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4. My max overclock was 3640 at 1.5V and I'm running at 3400 (8x425 FSB) at 1.3875V so I can run my fans at lower speeds.

I've read on other forums people getting around 3.4 to 3.6 depending on what voltage they are running. That's seems to be it for this chip. It looks like the review samples have been hand picked.

cpu-z isn't reporting voltage over 1.1v. coretemp shows it at 1.35 steady. Speedfan is also reporting 1.09. bios is at 1.47v now in a feeble effort to reach 3.5.

I have a few extra 80mm case fans lying around, I was considering putting one of those in the side fan slot to blow some more air on the mobo. I think I'll try to make sure it's actually the chip now by going down to 6x and seeing how high I can get the fsb.

most likely to be a bad chip...im surprised! but like slackenerny said, it couldve been cherry picked for the reviews...dunno...good luck and keep reporting!

computer died when I tried to boot at 6x450. I haven't heard of any fsb holes in these mobos, maybe this is the board instead of the cpu.
