E6750 Any good?

I'm fix'n to order (from the Egg)

- Mobo
- CPU
- RAM
- 8800GTS

Got an ABIT IP35-E in my cart....

Can't decide on a CPU... I am going to overclock.

I'm NOT an extremist... NOR do I care about e-Pen... I just want good Bangage/Buckage..

How much can I overclock a Boxed E6750 to using the bax fan? I figure with the extra money I save, I may get 4 gigs ram, instead of 2. Dunno yet.

CPU options are
E6750, E6850, and Q6600.

As far as Speed goes... Gaming speed is ALL I care about.... I don't think there is a good argument to go Quad... not at this point in time. (Ya know I can always get one when I build one for my Wife and give her this one).

So let's here it.. the 6750 going to be good enough for me? I play LOTRO...

i would recommend getting the 6750 with a 20 dollar arctic freezer 7 pro cooler. you could push that to 3.4GHz on that board easy. get some crucial or corsair ddr2-800 ram with 4-4-4-12 timings. for the 8800gts get an EVGA so when the more powerful 9800s come out you can use their step up program if you want to.

Im in the middle of a similar upgrade. I went with the E6750, asus P5K deluxe, and crucial 1066mhz ram. Hopefully it all plays nice together, ditched the stock cooler in favor of a tuniq tower which I changed out the fan and lapped the heatsink some. Went ahead and bought the BFG 8800GTS 640mb OC2. Evga makes some nice cards, my last set were 7800GT CO in a SLI setup....never have used the step up program they offer.

From the little reading/studying I've done (little because there is so much out there) most users are pretty happy with the E6750 and can reach 3.2-3.4ghz fairly easily. More than that depends on cooling, voltage, and luck of the draw concerning the chip itself.

Depending on what cooler you want to upgrade to, you may want to shop around a bit. Newegg has pretty fair prices on most stuff, but when I went to order the tuniq tower I found it at SVC for about 15-20 dollars cheaper shipped. I seem to read alot of positive reviews on the 20 dollar heatsink mentioned above though.

that tuniq makes a world of difference on the e6750. It's probably $30 more but would be a fantastic upgrade for you. I just bought 2 sticks of xms2 4-4-4-12 ddr2 800, and I like it just as much as my ddr2 1066 ballistix.

That's too big. I'm not interested in running the CPU at absolute MAX speed. 3.4 is plenty fast enough.. and if not, 3.2 will suffice.

I'm nearing the end of my vacation...so unless I make a mad dash to get this done before sunday it'll probably have to wait till next thursday or so to do it. I agree the tuniq is a monster of a heatsink.....I had my reservations about going to something this big but it seems like thats all the rage these days, BIG heatsinks. With the way things cycle in the computer world I'm sure we'll be back to smaller more efficient coolers at some point.

how's a smaller cooler more efficient at heat dissipation than a tuniq or tr ultra 120? I have used some good coolers over the past couple of years, including a zalman 9700 led, a stock opteron 180 hsf with 4 heatpipes, and an arctic cooler freezer 64 in addition to the tuniq. There is absolutely no comparison to the tuniq from the others, though admittedly I had a bad freezer 64 and ended up rma'ing it. I thought the zalman was huge when I first got it, but I was used to it by the time the tuniq came on board so it wasn't such a big jump in size.

Whitedog, if you're going for smaller/reasonable size and ultimate cooling isn't your aim then the freezer pro will be great for you.

I'm not saying there are coolers currently smaller/better than the tuniq...well, maybe there are some that are slightly smaller, I'm saying at some point there might be a redesign in coolers or some new fad that will lend itself to smaller setups. And also technically if someone broke it down for us, there might be a smaller cooler that is more efficient with regards to size to cooling capabilities than the tuniq....that doesnt mean it cools better than the tuniq, just means for its size it does a better job.

Its kinda like PSU.....big rage was lots of amperage on single rails, then we went to split/multiple rails....now PSU are returning with large single 12V rails because all of the sudden this is ideal/better (according to some).

I'm just guessing at some point there is going to be a new design which will result in a smaller cooler doing the same job or better than the tuniq and TR extreme. But for now, I guess big is king if you can fit em.

You're ignorant. Games are already beginning to take advantage of multi-core, and some show SIGNIFICANT gains by Quad-core (Supreme Commander). Alan Wake, and pretty much everything else of significance on the way will take advantage of the extra cores as well.

As Chrono observed, Q6600 > E6850 for gaming NOW, and when pretty much everything supports 4 cores and higher, it will be no contest. In many cases there will probably be nearly double the performance with QC.

Seems silly to *me* not to spend the few extra bucks on 2 extra cores and push it up as far as you can on stock cooling. It's been proven time and again that the extra cores really are starting to be utilized in games (and current ones will get patches no doubt).

It's your money so have fun with it. Can't go wrong with either at the end of the day....

Prudent strategy is to secure an E4x00 for under $100 and overclock it to +3.0GHz. There may be a minimal drop in gaming performance at very high screen resolution, but the main bottleneck is still the GPU. Wait next year to jump on Quad 45 nm Peryn. These will run cooler and have a good chance of hitting 3.6-4.0GHz on air. Price will probably be lower in 08.

That's a good option too, one that makes a lot more sense than a 6750. If you're overclocking and don't want to spend much, a dirt cheap E4X00 will easily hit 3Ghz on a decent mobo like the OP is getting. Performance difference will be minimal compared to E6750. Of course, if you have a bit of extra cash, the Q6600 will eat it's lunch in encoding (and any games that use QC, like SupCom, Alan Wake, and all the other upcoming goodies).

For now, it would have paid off bigtime for this guy to have saved $100 and upgraded to 8800GTX, or have gone with the Quad if he insisted on getting a higher end cpu.
