E6600 WTF

Ok im testing my E6600 and i must have something set wrong somewhere but i have everything on default settings. I did a test to see how fast this baby is and got these results


Dvd Shrink with inside Man with x2-3800 took 8:54
Dvd Shrink with inside man with E6600 took 9:50

I just checked Cpuz and this is what i got


Cpuz E6600

Specs as follows

Mobo Intel 975 Badaxe rev 305
Cpu E6600
Ram ddr2-667 Corsair value
Drive Wd Raptor 150 (boot) drive Seagate 250 (storage)
Evga 6800

No I already copied the files to my hard drive. I was encoding it

My x2-3800 rig was
Asus A8n5x
2 512 stick of corsair value ram ddr400 (conroe rig has 2 1 gig sticks)
1 seagate 250 gig hd
same video card

shouldnt the core speed be 2400.0 mhz? Every so often it will got to 2400.0mhz and the multiplier wil say 9 but it will only stay that way for a second or 2 then it goes back to 1600mhz
in my Bios there is a chipset config but it wont let me in it

 
Like we have said, it's because of SpeedStep. If you tax the processor it will speed up to its true speed. Use Orthos or Prime95 if you want to see it show correctly.
 
Maybe a stupid question, maybe not. But did you install all your motherboard's latest drivers? Chipset Drivers and such?
 
cmrmrc i did that and both cpus go to 2400mhz for some reason i did it with cpuz beside it and the third time it did it in 5:33. im not sure why it did 9:50 the first time but ill try it some more and see what happens. I did a benchmark with pcmark06 and the results were

New conroe rig scored around 6000 + i dont remember the exact score
old rig when i ad it scored 4415

i guess everything is ok but i darn near lost my mind

yes i did the bios and driver are up to date
 
Ok i found one little problem called DAOE which means

When i looked at the Bios the first time i read it as 1334 but it was 1304 so i updated that. It gave me a little more options in the bios but it still isnt anything like the Asus (Intel boards dont have as much bells and whistles as others)

Im transcoding at about 5:34 each time as opposed to the 7 or 8 minutes

Ill try it with dvd rebuilder and see how long that takes
 
Don't about anyone else but what I see displayed by cpu-z says your e6600 was running at 1.6GHz with a X6 multiplier ... that's not right.
 
All Core 2 Duo drop to 6 multiplier when not in use it is like AMD cool and quite . Just runs a game or super pi and you will see the speed jump.
 
it does go up to 2400mhz and the multiplier does go to 9 when i start using programs. i would prefer the option to disable it which i dont see how to but this may be because
a) cant be disabled
b) mobo doesnt support disable option, or i just dont know enough about it to disable it

either way as long as it work when i need it its ok i guess

ps some mention about dma everything is set to dma not the pio

If you can't find the BIOS option, you can make the change in Windows. Just choose a different power scheme other than Portable/Laptop and SpeedStep should be disabled.

If you can't find the BIOS option, you can make the change in Windows. Just choose a different power scheme other than Portable/Laptop and SpeedStep should be disabled.

Yea, it should be in the bios. Whatever Intel calls it (speedstep??). I think your not looking hard enough 😛
 
They call it EIST and it is in the POWER menu. However, once you disable it in the BIOS you will need a program like RightMark CPU Clock Utility from http://cpu.rightmark.org/products/rmclock.shtml to turn off C1E. It will be in the Advanced tab. I don't know why C1E is not in the BIOS but it may show up in a later version of the BIOS. To get maximum speed for performance measurements, you must turn OFF EIST and C1E.

Windows XP has embedded support for speed changes. Choose a power scheme such as always on to disable the EIST. Alternatively you can install Intel Desktop Control Center and under the preferences tab you can disable EIST.
- Update BIOS to 1304 (i think rev305s come with this version) - much better than 1334 in my experience
- make sure raptor is setup using sata mode - not pata emulation - don't change after installing windows

This should fix everything. If not ask people on the XS Forums as more people have the BadAxe there. I will try it on mine once I get my E6600.

x2-3800 it took dvd rebuilder a couple of seconds over 100 minutes
E6600 C2D it took dvd rebuilder a little over 65 minutes

Thats a 35% improvement so im happy i just wish i would have went with a mobo with a little more bling like the Asus P5w Dh

commonsense would have expected those results or better...3800+ is only 2ghz and we know the 2.66ghz E6600 which is running 33% higher clock beat the FX62 (2.8ghz) chip most of the time and that was more like a 40% gain over the 3800+...

It seems to extrapolate well...

Now that E6600 up to 3.2ghz and watch that time be in around 45minutes...
