E6600 temps over 65c on TAT under full load

I have my E6600 up to 3.4 Ghz, with the idle temps around 52 and as high as 69 under full load while running Orthos, but not higher than that, according to Intel TAT. Are these temps too dangerous? Should I back down the OC, or should I lower the voltage? I think I'm at 1.45 right now.

If htat full load is 24/7 use I would be concerned...If it ios dual orthos temp then I wouldn't be concerned. Most all apps dont run nearly as hot and stressful then orthos...

On my E6600@3.4ghz I get 52c(60c in core temp), but run F@H 24/7 and then temps are like 41c(50c in sore temp)

Thanks for the response Duvie!

Thats kind of what I was thinking but wasn't sure.

Although 69C is not the end of the world, I would be looking for ways to reduce the temps if you can. For one thing, you should be able to OC to 3.6GHz with that processor, and that would clearly push you into dangerous territory. My temps with orthos are 54C at 3.6GHz and I also have the Scythe Infinity. Although case cooling and ambient temps may affect how cool you might be able to get, the Scythe Infinity should get you well cooler than that with some effort!

My temps were much worse than yours, but by applying my TIM correctly, lapping my HSF and CPU, and getting a new case that cools better, I have dropped my temps by 28C under load!

Well I tell you what, my office's 6600 from dell goes to 81C at full load and stays there! The fans inside are running as loud as you can imagine but the temperature stays that high (according to core temp). So far it's still running. I don't really care because it is fried, dell would have to replace the whole thing. But I think that says your computer is probably okay at 60 something core temperature...

At 85C the processor is supposed to auto-throttle. 81C is much hotter than I would ever want to run my rig.

Heat is the enemy. When air cooling, load temps in the 50s are good, 60s are pushing it, and 70+ are (IMO) too high.

If GM offered you a 2 year warranty on your car - and you never had to change the oil, would you stop changing your oil?

That's not bad really.

However, you can usually get around 3200 Mhz w/ a lot less vcore, which will bring temps down significantly, with only a minimal performance loss.

So would I want to lower the multiplier to 8 and keep the FSB the same to get back to 1:1, or what would 4:5 be with the E6600 @ 3.2?

I have a e6600 running currently at 3.3 at 1.4volts. TAT shows 64 degrees centigrade when running orthos, about 53 centigrade idle.

If i run TAT's built in stress run it goes up to the low 70's centigrade.

This is with a zalman 9700, in a room that is in the mid 70's farenheit. My case thermometer shows 31 centigrade.

I reapplied the arctic silver 5 thinking that maybe i put on too much or didn't put it on right but the temps are about the same.

My orthos testing has been good running for 7hrs, so i think these temps are what is to be expected in a warm room.

Guess Im not the only one with high temps then... and Im thinking its REALLY the hsf.

This is the difference between 2 roughly comparable systems. Dell vs. self built.

Comparing my two rigs:

Dell Precision 390 box
E6600 stock 2.4 no oc (obvious being its from Dell and used at work)
Mobo - not sure: dell precision 390
Dell HSF
Not sure about the PSU
2GB (2X1 667mhz) ddr2
160gb sata (I think) seagate
LG DVDRW sata (I think)
ATI pcie v3400 fire gl 128mb (yeah its a cad box)

Idle @ 19-20C and load @ 35-37C (per TAT and Core Temp)

Antec case (cant remember the model but roughly the same if not more openings than the dell)
E6600 stock 2.4 no oc
Asus p5ne-sli
ThermalTake LGA 775 silent
ThermalTake 600W PSU
2GB (2X1 800mhz) Corsair xms2 4.4.4.12
300gb sata seagate
Plextor sata DVDRW
EVGA pcie eGe-Force 7950 GT KO 512mb

Idle @ 39-40C and load @ 54-57C (per TAT and Core Temp)

I only currently run one chassis fan on the antec and I believe there are two on the dell but this reading from the dell is WAY lower than that of what I am finding even for liquid cooled systems... I havent really popped the case open on the dell and I assume the drives are sata but would not even make a real difference if ata, but theres a 20 degree difference here!!! I hear that the case and heat sink on the Dell is MASSIVE but 20c difference??!?!! Anybody else notice the difference from a Dell to a Self Built????

The Dell temps are incorrect.

There is no way you are running idle temps that low unless it's sitting outside & you have winter where you live.

35-37C (your load temps) are closer to real idle.

So basically, your Dell is likely running just as hot, just it doesn't report temps correctly.

I am partially thinking the same thing. I am running two identical Dells and both report roughly 20C idle. Both from Core Temp and TAT and this is DTS right????? Both just seem arctic when compared to my personal machine...
