E6600 Temp Problem

I have a brand new build, my first one in two years:
-Intel C2D E6600
-HSF: Zalman 9700 (cut a little off the bottom to make room for the bottom resistors)
-EVGA 680i
-EVGA 8800GTS
-2GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2-1000
-PCP&C 750W Silencer
-Antec SOHO Fileserver case w/ x4 case fans (low speed 20db noise)

Temp Monitor:
-Using Intel TAT

1st Try:
-I used the Thermal Goop that came with the Zalman and brushed a thin layer over the whole top of the processor. The temps were much higher than I expected: about 32c/36c at the desktop and 38c/42c under full load at the default cloc.

2nd Try:
-I used some Artic Silver 5 as per the directions from their website for a C2D. I applied a single thin line directly over the chip area. This bought me about 2c better temps. I

Zalman 9700 Problem?
-I mounted the bracket on where one side is pointing toward the RAM and the other side is pointing toward the rear of the case. I don't know if this is normal or not but while it seemed like it was on tight I could rotate it pretty freely.

I just did my first overclock:
-3.0Ghz
-Vcore: 1.40v

Under 100% load from a Prime95 instance on each core (1 hour into it) I'm getting temps that are bouncing around between 51c -to- 57c. The average seems to be about 54c on each core, although from looking at the TAT log they can stay around 52c for long periods. The 57c hit only happened once during the hour Prime95 has been on so far.

From what I've read you shouldn't go over 60c and this is a pretty early overclock (and it's winter!) Should I be worried, or what should I do? I'd really like to get to 3.4 and that seems like a realistic goal aside from the temps I'm getting.

Thanks for any advice.

Yeah seriously... under dual prime 95 you're only getting 54 C core temp... that's very good. Even if it goes over 60 a little bit, that's still fine. These things can take way more than that....

For 3 Ghz?

Come on now guys, those temps don't seem a bit high to you?

They definitely seem high to me.

I certainly don't have a "golden chip" and mine is at 3.6 ghz on 1.456v vcore (after vdroop).

I don't know for sure whether it is fully stable or not, but temps are temps.

Vorpal if its not too late to return the Zalman, I would try to get a hold of a Tuniq Tower instead of it.

SVC has some in stock.

If you cant return the Zalman, you could try getting a Silversone FM121 fan to go on it.

That might lower the temps a little bit.

what are you saying??? 32idle and 38 load are great temps, depending on your room temp, those would be excellent if your room temperature ranges anywhere from 70-75C

If your that paranoid about temps, go water and don't look back ;)

And don't forget to lap your IHS :D

I'd have to agree with what was already said - those seem like good temps.

PS - Have you tried using CoreTemp to measure the temps?

Don't lap unless you have to... it voids the warranty... Also those are great temperatures...
Let me tell you an example: my 6600 at office (built by Dell) idles at 44C (room temp probably 25C) and loads at 83C. Everything is stock I didn't have anything to do with the cooling (all dell). That C2D is still running. (Personally I don't care if it fries because Dell would have to replace it for free anyways)

Ive got a E6600 at stock speeds, Scythe Ninja Rev B with fan and AS5, EVGA 680i, all in a Antec P180. My case temp is around 36C, processor around 43C idle and up to 59C load running Orthos, all with ambient around 70F. Ive seen people running the same setup with the Scythe passive and getting low to mid 30's idle. Tried reinstalling the heatsink 4 different times and cannot seem to get better temps. Any idea what is wrong?

since you also have a p180.. try having your exhaust fan and fan on top of your case blowing on your scythe

Isnt that against the whole cooling setup this case is made for? Cool air in the front, hot air out the back. I might give it a try but Im just not sure I understand the whole idea behind it.

This is what I was saying was crazy temps. 3 Ghz at 60*C Load?

Maverick, exhaust fans are meant to BLOW OUT exhaust, don't change them around.

Unfortunatly I cant tell you whats wrong with ur setup because I am unfamiliar with the P180 and Ninja.

All I can do is suggest a Tuniq Tower.

I know the Tuniq is supposed to be one of the best coolers out there, but it wasnt in stock when I put together this computer and the Ninja is supposed to work alot better then what its doing for me. Im stumped.

That is the way I have my P180 set up and it seems to work great. I have an Ultra120 and my E6600 clocked to 3550 @ 1.50V. My temps under Orthos prime with Coretemp get up to 55-57 which I am very happy with.
