e6420 OC's @ 3.086

With me CPU OC's @ 3.1 ghz(385) with 1.5v I idle at 38-45C but when I game (COH) my temps rise to high 50's and low 60's (61,62) Im new to Overclocking and I just wanted some assurance that im not pushing me CPU to far on its STOCK HEATSINK. Thanks

You should adjust it to a lower frequency, like around 8x350, until you get a better heatsink. Once you get a good heatsink, you should adjust it to 8x401, then work your way up from there.

So curiosity.. 8x401 at what voltage? Can you remind me what's wrong with 400? I did a quick attempt at OCing last night and 400 didn't work so I just backed down to 375 and it's rock solid with only 5C increase in Orthos loads.

The lowest possible, trial and error will be your guide.

1.5v?

OMG at only 3.08?? please turn your voltage down. You dont need 1.5V to run any C2D @ 3.08.

If your chip requires 1.5V to run 3.0ghz, then your chip is seriously a dud when it comes to ocing.

And 60's is fine.

However, overclocking + 4meg cache C2D = Uber cooling. Something really big and tall. Ultra120 comes into mind. :X

I can run at 3.2Ghz at 1.35v so there should be no reason to be that high for that OC. I can run at 3.6 with 1.5v and I'm on water. If you're on stock cooling, I dont' recommend upping the voltage any higher than 1.35.

60ºC is the point where you should stop your O/C, especially if it will be at load for any decent amount of time.

What are you reading the temp with? If it's not TAT, then that CPU is getting seriously cooked.

oh ****** thats right too. ahahahhaha

i believe the max the board can handle on that cpu would be around 65C.

Yea I put it back down to stock settings till I get things cleared up. I have now Idea what TAT is...and im reading it with speedfan.

I figured out what TAT is (google is your friend) with 8x350 at stock vcor TAT reads 39-41 idle 63-65 100%load via TAT. Judging from the replies here I assume these temps are fine?

Yeah that should be fine. TAT will heat up your processor more than any game or application, so 65 is pretty much the max temp your system should reach.

Thanks for the help 🙂 Someone mentioned avoce that I should buy a diffrent cooler... To those of you who have C2d's what should I aim at getting? somthing under 40 bucks not including shipping.

i highly recomend you strech your budget a tad bit more and get this:
http://www.heatsinkfactory.com/shop/product.php?productid=16438

better hurry b4 it gets sold out. If it does by the time you read this, froogle it.

But thats about the third best you can do right now on a air heat sink.

2nded, I have the extreme version and am putting around at 3.4Ghz at 55C without optimizing my voltage. That's inside a P182 with all fans set to low and a scythe fan on the HS on automatic (and it stays pretty slow too). Also contributing to the heat is a fanless 7950GT XXX @612

his budget is nice for cooling. Why not get the best possible if its near range?

1. IFX-14 <--- basically 2 ultra 120 stamped together.
2. Ultra 120 Extreme
3. Ultra 120 regular
4. Tuniq Tower

Thats the basic breakdown for aircoolers.

Freezer is around $20 + $10 shipping and it provides decent cooling for the price... it comes with fan... if ur not into extreme overlcocking than i suggest that

Define EXTREME? does wanting 3.2or 3.3 gh extreme? if so then I will save 🙂

No im pretty sure that hsf will give u those speeds... and keep u cool enough... but the overclock depends more on the mobo n cpu ... if u read the newegg reviews ( more than 600) they say about 10-15 degress C less than original stock cooler.... which i think its pretty good... look it up on newegg Arctic Freezer 7 Pro... n check the reviews... but buy it from Ewiz as above recommended for much cheapper
