E6400 vs E6600

Here is the components that I already bought:
1. GA P965DS3 (rev 1.3)
2. Crucial Balastix 2 x 1 GB
3. EVGA 7600GT

Switching back and forth between E6400 and E6600.
I don't do lot of Overclocking ... and no gaming.

Will do lot of Audio/Video Editing though - Cakewalk, Adobe, Pinnacle, Sony Vega Studio etc. Also will do lots of Video and Audio encoding ...

Any suggestions?
 
Technically the E6600 will be better for video editing. If you're asking if it's worth it to go for the E6600 over the E6400, then yes it is worth it if not overclocking.

I was more concerned about the L2 cache (2MB vs 4mb) ... how much difference that make?
 
Your choices should be between E6420 and E6600.

Audio and Video Encoding Benchmarks

If you are going to be doing a lot of work, seconds here and there will add up into minutes. The performance difference is roughly 8-10% but the price difference is 20% which is still not too bad.

Of course, I would rather get a $185 E6420 and a $40 aftermarket cooler and clock that cpu skyhigh to 3.2-3.4ghz as opposed to getting E6600 for $225 and running on stock cooler.

Personally, I don't like to overclock when I do video editing because if anything at all goes wrong it can cause massive problems. You might want to consider holding off if possible then getting the Q6600 which is a quad core for $266 in about a month. If you can't wait, get the E6600 if you plan on doing a lot of editing or the E6420 if you don't plan on doing a lot of editing.
 
e6420 even the most moderate of OC of a FSB of 300MHz will put you at the same level as an e6600. I have my e6400 running at 2.4GHz (e6600 stock speed) and all things the same minus the 2MB l2 cache on mine it is the same processor. Going with the e6420 would give you that 4mb cache and updated cores.

Honestly, I think you should wait. You'd probably save money by doing so.

But I already bought all other components from NewEgg and it will be mentally tough to sit on those and wait for Intel's price cut.
I hope they surprize everybody by cutting price earlier and let us save some money 🙂

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting on that. IMO Intels price cuts where designed to combat the the release of AMD's barcelona, which has been repeatedly delayed and the early performance reports are not good. In light of this new info Intel may not be in any hurry to cut prices in July as everyone suspects.

And even if they do cut to the expected levels, there will be a period of profit taking by the retailers before the lower prices trickle down to the consumer.
Personally I would be surprized to see a sub $300 quad any earlier than Sep/Oct

hmm, I didn't know you bought everything already. Go with the E6420 then if you really cannot wait, but quad cores are a lot faster at video editing than dual cores.
 
Video Editing is one of a lot of applications that really uses a large Cache to improve performance. E6420 combines the two good atributes of the E6400 and E6600: The most low-cost (E6420 usually have the same price of E6400.) and the larger cache. It's the better choice!
