E6400 Temps Very High?

Giga GA-965G. No overclock. Stock Intel cooling.
My E6400 idles at 52c (and it cold this time of year). When running Prime 95 Torture Test temps rise to 74C (with about 50% CPU use). These numbers seem way high from what others report. Are they? Is there anything I can do other then buy another cooling solution.

That's very high . . . are you sure your HSF is mounted properly?

And I hate to bring it up again, but have you checked the IHS on your CPU to see whether or not you've got a concave IHS?

No, thanks for mentioning this because I don't know what it means. Can you explain, please.

Sounds like your heatsink/fan is not mounted properly. Might want to check that.

Also make sure your case has plenty of ventilation. Take the side off if necessary.

take the side off and make a house fan blow on it, if the temperatures are a lot cooler than you have an airflow problem.

for whatever reason (most likely bad QA/QC) some of the IHS on these C2D chips are concave in the middle... meaning the middle of the IHS doesn't make contact with th bottom of the HSF. it's not visibly obvious but if you ever decide to lap your ihs, you'll notice all right.

If you go check out artic silvers webpage, they show you how to put on thermal paste onto these new dual core chips (a line of paste rather than a small bead as usual).

Thanks. I spoke to Intel and they think the chip is bad. The case had plenty ventilation and I took of the sides. And I reapplied the heatsink. And I flashed my BIOS.
Anyway, when I get the replacement I'll wipe off the intel grease and put on some Artic 5.

To close the loop. It must have been a bad CPU because I popped in the new one I got from Intel and temps are around 35 resting and 50 when running stress test.
