E6400 temperatures

What temp should I expect on the CPU running at idle with stock settings? Asus Probe is reporting 84°C which I know is WAAAAY too high. I didn't get a chance to get back into the case before going to work this morning, but I'm guessing that the cooler must not be installed correctly. Any other possibilities?

cheers

I get 44 degrees under full load overclocked to 3.2 ghz. You definetly don't have it on all the way. I did use Arctic Silver rather than the stock paste though.

Yoxxy's using some wrong temperature probe. Your using somethign wrong too ... use CoreTemp or Intel Thermal Monitor .. its around 74degrees Celsius ... if the fan is REALLY low and your using QST. If your using auto, it SHOULD be around 65 or so ... at most

What OS? And what are your idle temps in the BIOS? I've downloaded 3+ programs (Intel TAT, Everest and SpeedFan) and they all vary wildly in Vista. I'm getting low-mid 30's C in the BIOS with a Zalman 7700-alCu and doing load tests in Everest gets low 50's max.

Bottom line is are you having any throttling issues or shutdowns? Try a few different monitoring programs and see if there's a major difference in reported temps.

Despite what Everest or TAT says, I used to get about the same temps from my A64 4000 with the same heatsink in Asus Probe and I can tell the Core2 setup is cooler - one real easy way to tell is the room isn't as hot and I don't feel the same amount of heat coming out of the back of my case.

That being said...check the way the cooler is seated on the mobo. Intel coolers and their plastic pins have a way of feeling seated when they're only halfway locked.

Just to update - rechecked and found one of the fan mounting pins not all the way seated. Reseated (this time using recommended procedure of the two opposite mounts simultaneously - my screwup the first time) and now the idle temp is about 42°C. I've got AI NOS on and it throttles the multiplier back to 6x when idle.
Running COD2 the temp gets up to about 55-57°C at full frenzy.

That sounds about right....i still don't like high temps 🙁...

I can't even close the side door on the case because of the heat. I have a 7900GTO and these suckers HOT HOT HOT FLAMING HOT, i'd need like 4 120mm fans on the side of my case lol... was thinking about doing it.
