E6400 @ 3560 - Nice !!

E 6400 from the Egg .. Arrived Thursday .. Orthos stable overnight for 13+ hours..

Have Gigabyte GA965P-DS3 F4 BIOS
CORSAIR XMS2 1GB (2 x 512MB) PC6400

Not sure about the Core volts.. Have it set to 1.5 in BIOS,
but as you see, CPUID says it's 1.213

Other times it says 1.42 ..

( Anyone know where to make a voltmeter reading on DS3 ? )


It was stable at 3.2G at default volts..


When I bump it to 3.6, Orthos errors out in about 10 minutes..


Nicest overclock I have seen since I had a 300 Celry do 500 ..

Under full load ( Ortho ) CoreTemp says 58 - 61 , but I don't think it's
that hot .. I had a probe right next to the IHS, and it never got higher than
~52 ...

This is very encouraging to me because I went with that exact same Corsair RAM and I have an E6400. I am still waiting on my DS3 to show up(I picked "slow boat from china" 7-9 business day shipping because it was free).

I figure the 512mb sticks sidestep the DS3 overclocking issues with the 1gig sticks.

Besides, all I want is 3.2Ghz stable.

Yeah no matter what you overclock it to who can tell the difference anyway! It's not like gamers or people who encode video or do rendering even need CPUs! Intel don't even have circuits in their CPUs so they don't scale overclocking like my X2!!!!1

I have left the RAM on auto, and you can see it defaults to 23 7 7 5 .. I have it at 2.0v ..

Anyone know how much Volts this RAM will take ? And what would be some lower timings to try ?

I had 4 sticks stable at 415 , but I haven't tried all 4 at 445 yet .

I've got my 6300 and OCZ Plat 800 @ 430x7 = 3.0 ghz on a Zalman 9500 air, Gigabyte 965P-S3 mobo. Temps are 45C/57C with dual instances of Prime 95 at 22 hours, no errors. I could push the clocks higher but I'm not an OC expert and really don't need to, I'm happy with a 62% overclock

I don't know about the AMD fanboy you're talking about , but I've owned an AMD X2 3800 and had it OC'd to 2.6.....which I think was a very respectable overclock. I benched it extensively, and my current C2D destroys my X2 in all CPU-intensive tasks and apps. VERY big difference, and for not much more money. I'm no fanboy either way, I'm a bang-for-the-buck fanboy, and my new C2D rig gives stunning performance on the cheap.

So if I can hit those numbers on the cheap with minimal overclocking experience, just imagine what you experts can do with these C2D chips. Makes OC'ing an X2 kind of a waste of time and money.

Oh well, maybe AMD will pick it up in a year or 2 and regain the crown. The competition only benefits us consumers!!

Well, you had to buy a new system didn't you? The real question is, how has your C2D improved your computing experience compared to the X2? Personally I'd like a new C2D system, just for the hell of it, but I can't justify spending the cash since it would not make a noticeable difference in my typical usage. Of course, if I was a benchmark junkie it'd be a different story.

Well, I sold my AMD X2 system for a good price to someone coming from a Pentium-D. We're both happy, he got a great AMD upgrade and I got $$$ to put toward the C2D. So I can't complain. I understand the point about benchies, I truly do. They're simply an indicator. However, I DO notice a huge difference for rendering times in Photoshop, compiling times in Radiant, DVD Shrink times, etc. I can encode a DVD AND play games without issue. To me, that's a great "computing experience" as mentioned.

So for the price, that performance is simply amazing. I'm very demanding on multi-tasking and CPU intensive stuff. And I'm cheap too LOL, so overclocking the snot out of a 6300 is irresistable. Don't get me wrong, the AMD X2 was GREAT, and for the average person it works amazing. But for someone who really wants superior performance (and affordable), the C2D shines.

Like I said, I'm no fanboy. I rode the AMD crest, and am now riding the C2D this round. Next round I'll go with whomever gives the best performance for price. As a smart consumer, I think I deserve no less. Large companies have absolutely no loyalty to their customers nowadays, so why should I? Intel gets my money this time, if AMD wants it next time they really need to take heed and make it worth my (and other people's) money. Will AMD give me 62% of my money back because I'm loyal to them? NO. Yet I get a 62% overclock on my C2D. Intel has simply given me alot more value and performance for my money this time. We'll see what happens in 2 years when I upgrade again

what are your typical uses? You dont need to just benchmark to see a difference. you obviously OC so you would likely with the C2D as well....

In every aspect of computing I do I feel the power...

Cadd, Encoding, Decoding, transcoding, F@H distributed computing......

My benchmarks are usually actual apps...not superpi, sandra, etc....

Your comment can be construed as being rather OChungry like in terms of C2D performance....I scraped my quad athlon boxes if you have any questions as to its increased performance
