When I go into check my bios right after a reboot when temps were @ 50c idle in vista in RMclock, Coretemp .95, and speedfan, it reports cpu temp at 38c or so. TAT reports +3 or so c more. Obviously it's going to cool down a little bit on reboot.. but that much? I did this a couple times and the result was the same.

Voltage is set to around 1.38, and under orthos load temps raise to about 57c.

If this is right, then are the newer C2D chips running a lot cooler? I see reports of OC'd chips idle at under 30c, load low 40s. I find that hard to believe. My ambient temp is around 70f.

I've tried both this zalman 9700 (which isn't exactly firmly pressing down on the chip, but it's as good as I can get it, I can actually *slightly* shift the HS to turn left or right) and the big typhoon, and the temps have been about the same.

P5b Vanilla (yeah... meh, stable tho)
p180 all the fans I can put in it
AS5 thermal grease

Tried reseating the hs many times.

Any info would be appreciated.

those do seem like high idle temps. my E6420 @ 3.4 & 1.4375v idles at 29C. do u have the power-saving features turned on in your bios?

Yes I do. I can't imagine how you have such a low idle temp with a voltage of 1.4375! Something doesn't seem right on my end.

Theres always going to be confusion with temps because generic temp readings from the BIOS are about 10-15c lower than Core Temps. And many people dont bother to diffrentiate when reporting temps, i.e., some say 'WOW, my chip is 30c' (when reading the BIOS temp) while someone else says 'well mine are 50c, so something wrong' (when reading Core temps).

If yours are 57c load (Core temp?) under Orthos at 1.38v, then you should be quite happy, thats an excellent temp and justifies your Zalman Cooler investment.

I had my E6400 @ 3.2GHz, 1.4v, in 29C ambients at 37C idle (cores) 32C (CPU), 59C load on my Zalman CNPS9700

The motherboard sensor reports the temperature of the socket, not the CPU, so I am guessing the 50C idle temps are core temps, right?

Yup thats the core reading.

my E6400 idles high too even on my TR Ultra-120 with a lapped IHS on the CPU. It's just how it is sometimes. I have a week26 though which isn't that good.

What does yours usually idle at?

I have horrible experience with Zalman 9700 LED too. First of all, here is my temps:

Idle: 43-55C (depends on the room temperature)
Load: 58-63C (also depends on the room temperature)

If I turn on AC, the idle temps drops from 50C to 43-45C. Same with load temps. My room is small, and there is a LCD TV close to my PC, so it gets hot very quickly. I tried to reseat the HSF 3 times, but got no difference or only little. Also, I keep the side panel open because if I close, the temps increase by ~5C. The heatsink doesn't feel warm under idle, it gets a little warmer only on load.
