e6320 so much better than e4x00 ?

Intel normally prices CPUs according to their stock perf.

On April 22nd :
e4300 ( 2MB, 1.8G, 0800FSB ) = $113
e4400 ( 2MB, 2.0G, 0800FSB ) = $133
e6320 ( 4MB, 1.83G, 1066FSB ) = $163

Does that mean the e6320 is so much better than the e4400 ? Remember, at stock the e6300 ( $183 now ) is only slightly better than the e4300 ( $163 now ).

Somehow, I think the prices on April 22nd will be different from those mentioned in the price list floating around.

What do you all think ?

Lower cache and FSB might do it, but I think their performance would be pretty close.
It does seem odd to release 2 chips which will have quite a high % difference in price, but a very small performance difference, BUT, the E4400 also has no VT, as well as the smaller cache and lower FSB, which is another reason for the cheaper price. So while the performance may be similar (and it may overclock better), you can't make up for the lack of other features (well, VT) in any way unless you buy the more costly chip.

The short answer is that for general purpose computing, the 4xxx processor will be the better buy.

For encoding and probably other tasks as well, the 6xxx series will be better.

The really low-end 6xxx series will probably be of interest mostly to serious OC'ers, and I wouldn't expect to see aggressive pricing on that at retail.

at stock I wouldn't expect a more than 10% diff between the two. But that extra 4mb cache is gonna be helpful in come apps for sure like games are normally sensitive to extra cache.

Wouldn't the 0.2G advantage that the e4400 has over the e6320 more than make up for the 2MB extra cache ( of the e6320 ) ? It's going to be very close, imo at stock the e4400 will perform better than the e6320 for most users.

It has a 0.2 GHz clock advantage, but has a 2MB cache, 266 MHz FSB and no VT disadvantage. I don't think 200MHz will make up for the first two deficits anyway. VT is just a feature and has no effect on performance.

That 170MHz is a 8% improvement, with the slower FSB make that a 5% improvement and then the cache can easily make up for it.

E6320 should be faster.

<HELP!> lol

I was all set to buy an E6400 and OC to about 3.2 with air cool and DDR2-800. Nice and simple.

But then I heard about the E6420 coming out and how that would lower prices, so I started thinking about waiting a few weeks and getting an E6600 for the price of an E6400 now, ~ $227.

But from this thread, it doesn't seem to make too much sense. Would I be better off buying an E6420? Or just buy the E6400 today because I am impatient? :)

If you are impatient then I would say to get the E6400(B2 stepping) immediately. The E6420 looks sweet but is scheduled for Q2 which is April at the earliest.

I would say to just get what you know will work well. Waiting for prices to drop will have you running old equipment for a very long time as the prices are always dropping... at some point you simply have to jump in and start having fun. ;)

Glad to help!

I just added a sig link to my rig to give you ideas on how you might proceed. I am very happy with my DS3/E6400 system and it's gonna take a real deal on quadcore chips to make me upgrade! :)

I will probably add more RAM and upgrade my videocard as my next improvements although I must say that I am pretty darned content with my system as it sits right now. But this monitor is looking kinda small... ;)

Nice rig. I would definitely go to 2GB of memory. You will definitely see a difference. Especially when you upgrade to Vista. On the other hand, you have that smokin' 8900 card. I am buying a 8800 GTX for my new rig. I think that with the E6400 and 2GB of DDR2-800 memory, I should be golden.
