UPDATE: E3 Preview, Torchlight 2 will support LAN gaming!

Torchlight 2

I am - I was a big fan of dungeon crawlers and the original Torchlight was well done - it was not without its gameplay issues (uneven pacing/difficulty, odd economy) but for all intents and purposes, I think many people can agree it was a surprise hit for 2009.

It's slated for release in a few months, and I for one can't wait, esp. with multiplayer enabled - finally something the wife (she played a lot of the original Torchlight as well) and I can enjoy together!

I played Fate 1,2 and Torchlight. They are more of a casual experience in my opinion, nothing to be excited for but worth playing when there is no other big title better to play.

i plan to be occupied with: DA2, Witcher 2, M&M: Heroes VI, Portal 2, and FO:NV before i consider TL2.

bring on the sales! i cant afford all'o'this! :)

I agree with the above for the most part. Torchlight was so casual I had no desire to play it when games like Diablo and Titan Quest existed. If they really, and I mean really flesh out Torchlight 2, I might be interested. However, they will have to do something utterly amazing, because they will be competing with Diablo III and Grim Dawn if their release dates aren't too far apart.

I actually finally fired up Torchlight for the first time last month and I played ~4hrs of it but got bored after that. Just not hardcore enough for me.

Torchlight is entertaining but it didn't grab me like Diablo II did - maybe because I'm a lot older now.. :p I should finish Torchlight, though. If I get back into it, I might get #2.

I agree with most of the posters. The first one was fun in a kind of lighthearted, casual way but cant get too excited about another one either.

Just got DA2, want to get Dungeon Seige 3 and Fable 3 when they get cheaper. Also Skyrym and Mass Effect 3 and Diablo 3 are on the horizon, so not sure if we need am RPG lite too.

I enjoyed it until I beat the main dungeon, then the whole "endless" (I think?) secondary dungeon was pretty boring. Perhaps if I hadn't played D2/DS2/WoW before TL I would've stuck with it longer, but I've had my fill of "get the item to kill the monster to get the item to kill the monster to get the item...".

Loot with a special colored name just doesn't make a game. Though I do think if multiplayer is implemented adequately it'll be worth a run or two, and some additional classes would be a solid upgrade.

I like Torchlight, but I have yet to finish my play through. Every dungeon is really the same except with a different theme/skin. The other problem I have with it is the difficulty curve. In the beginning the game was just way to easy. I was slaughtering everything with one hit. Fast forward a few dungeons and I am getting destroyed myself in just a few hits.

Assuming I finish TL1, I will pick up 2 at some point when it's on sale. It's something I would play, but not something I'm super excited for.

According to steam I logged over 50 hours in torchlight. Definetly looking forward to TL2.

TL1 was a bit on the 'lite' side but still quite enjoyable. In fact, overall, I wish games would go somewhat more in this direction, not so heavy, have such a learning curve, and so much complexity. I like simpler games that are easy to jump in to and enjoy. I'm sure I'll pick up TL2, multiplayer alone will make it worth it.

Torchlight was a great game when you just wanted to do some mindless dungeon crawling. I'll check out Torchlight 2 and will probably buy it eventually.

This is silly, turn up the difficulty. Normal was easy. Hard was normal and very hard was hard.

Pretty simple to advance really. If you were struggling, just do some of the side maps. These things make the game trivial. If you stay away from them and are playing on Hard/Very Hard it was pretty solid I thought.

Biggest complaint I have is the end boss takes like a year on difficult levels.

I enjoyed TL1, but it's hard to say if I'll make it around to TL2. I just don't see it competing with D3 and I already have Darkspore to hold me over until D3 beta and release. Maybe if it was cheap and I could rope some friends in but not likely.

Even though Tochlight has been on sale several times, I never bought it due to the lack of multiplayer. My kids and I used to play diablo II for hours, I miss those days.

After torchlight 2 comes out, I suspect it will be the dungeon crawler of choice until Diablo III is released.

The sooner torchlight is released, the better. If torchlight 2 is released too soon to DIII, people will probably not even consider playing it.

If it's still released in a few months as planned it will probably be fairly successful. There's no telling how far away Diablo 3 is so it's a good guess that it's still a ways off. Torchlight would have more than enough time to shine until then. Can't say I'm terribly excited, but it depends how much content is there.

I am very excited about TL2. Extremely excited. I loved the original and beat the whole thing. But I am disappointed that TL2 will not have PVP. That's VERY lame.

CoOp is nice, but it's just not enough. If TL would have PvP, many people would forget about Diablo 3 for a while. There would be reason to replay the game over and over again in hopes of finding better equip for PvP, and the game would go on and on. The way it is with TL and TL2, is that the interest burns out as soon as the main story is finished. : (

Also, coming in 2011 means end of 2011. Otherwise they'd give an exact date.

For what its worth, wal-mart says D3 is scheduled for release 12-01-2011

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Diablo-III...Games/14018467

Which makes sense for the 2011 holiday shopping season.

As long as TL2 gets released a few months before D3, it should not be overshadowed.

Given that video games don't release on Thursdays (they release on Tuesdays like movies and CDs) I'd say they just made it up like every other store has done. Walmart doesn't have some inside information, they're an "everything" retail store... and not even big for video games. I don't know why people believe that Walmart, Gamestop, etc has some way of knowing releases when the company WHO IS MAKING THE GAME ITSELF hasn't even said when it's coming. It's all a guess.

Blizzard hasn't even given a time frame yet, which means it's not going to be in the next month or so. It's still possible to be a holiday release, as with Starcraft 2 Blizzard finally announced the July 27th release date in mid-earlly May. They could wait till Sept-Oct and still announce a holiday release within a similar time-frame to SC2. But until Blizzard themselves says something, everything else is as much of a guess than either of us can make.

My point: using Walmart as an accurate release guide is laughable

There's not a chance in hell of that happening.

Thread noted for when December rolls around.

As long as TL2 is not released anywhere around the release od D3, I think it will sell good and time to build up a good fan base.

If TL is released anywhere around the release of D3, TL2 is probably going to be overshadowed and over looked.

Personally, I am looking forward to the release of TL2. I will probably pick up a copy for myself and my 2 kids so we can get some multiplayer action going on.

I haven't read up much on the sequel, so I guess we'll see how it turns out. Torchlight was ok for what it was, and I enjoyed it, but thinking back on it, there really wasn't much to it so I can see why people would get bored of it quickly, especially with the lack of multiplayer.

They're definitely trying their luck going up near Diablo 3, although it might turn out well for them (people get hyped for Diablo 3, it gets pushed back, and so people buy Torchlight to get the fix for the time being). I know Blizzard has said they're trying hard to get it out this year, but I really doubt they do.

Actually companies like GameStop do get "inside information" about upcomming releases. Publishers can't get away with keeping them completely in the dark until an public official announcement. They need the stores' cooperation on pre-orders, marketing and even shelf space. They're not going to do this without some assurances that the game is actually going to come out within a reasonable time frame.

I think Walmart pretty much outsources their video game department, at least here in Canada, so they may not know much, but I found GameStop to be a relatively reliable predictor of game releases. I don't know how much of that comes from privately disclosed information or just educated guesses based on long experience dealing with publishers, but they do seem to know something. I've even seen cases where GameStop's date has differed from the publisher's official annouced date, and a couple of weeks later the official date was changed to match GameStop's.

Really, to suggest a store like GameStop or even Walmart couldn't have any information simply because the publisher hasn't made an official public announcement is just naive.

I suppose you're right with Gamestop, but I still don't think Walmart knows much in this case (yet). I would be much more convinced if they had a date like Dec 5th, which is a Tuesday and a normal game release date. All these places that are listing Dec 1st or 31st are just putting a "decemberish" placeholder until they get more info... be it public or insider dates.

I liked Fate 2 much more than Torchlight, although I'm not sure why.

I'm not excited for Torchlight 2, but I am genuinely interested in the developer and what their newest offering brings to the table. I guess I felt that combat in Torchlight wasn't as fun as I expected it to be.
