When I first put together the system, I hit 290*11 (3190 Mhz) @ 1.46v stable. The past few weeks I've been getting BSODs with the irql_not_less_or_equal message fairly frequently, so I've been rolling back my overclock. I'm now down to 260*11 (2860 Mhz) @ 1.44v. Granted, it's been getting a warmer in my house, but load temps have always been in the 51-55 C range. I haven't noticed any pattern as to when the BSODs occur.

I did add a Corsair XMS 4GB kit, so all 4 slots are populated now, but I don't see why this would be a RAM issue since I'm not overclocking it at all. (DDR-800 @ 5-5-5-18, 2.1v)

Anyone know what's the issue here?

pretty sure that populating all 4 slots IS an issue, it puts more strain on the northbridge, which is also what you're overclocking. That being said, the P35 northbridge shouldn't have a problem at <300FSB speeds.

Did you get any BSOD's prior to installing the new memory? Have you tried removing the new memory? Is this a clean install (fresh load)? What are you running the vdimm at? What about the MCH? There are lots of questions that need to be answered before anyone would be able to really help you.

Well, I got a new hard drive two days ago, so I copied the OS partition from my old one over. I suppose technically this isn't a FRESH install, but I haven't made any significant hardware changes since the original installation.

Everything in the BIOS aside from FSB, vcore, mem voltage, and DRAM timings are at default. I'm not home at the moment, but I'll check what the default settings are.

I'm fairly certain I got a couple of BSODs before installing the new memory, but they were few and far between. I'll try running 2 sticks and see what happens.

Erm. What do you define stable? Running without a bluescreen for a few hours of everyday usage, or 24 hours of orthos?

You shouldn't be seeing bluescreens at all if your machine is truly stable. For reference, I've had one bluescreen in 3 years across 5 machines which run XP. A couple of those are overclocked. Going to attribute that one bluescreen to not having ECC ram and cosmic rays though -- I still consider all my machines stable.

When I did the initial overclock, overnight Orthos was stable. The BSODs occur seemingly at random, but usually when I'm NOT stressing my CPU (web browsing, music, Guitar Rig). I've never had a BSOD while gaming or running Orthos.

Bad drivers and other things can cause BSOD besides hardware stability problems. Try running everything at stock for a little while and see if the problem goes away.

I think I've narrowed down the problem to the Ballistix sticks (say that 5 times fast). The Corsair XMS sticks haven't given me any problems yet.

I might try reinstalling the Crucial ram and upping NB voltage. Would that help at all?

I think the Ballistix, new version aren't too reliable, you might be a victim of that. memtest it thoroughly see how it does on its own. I

Yes, it definitely can. As a matter of fact, the only time(s) in my life where I've had BSOD's while doing either nothing, or web browsing, was the time I accidentally used the wrong video driver. I had accidentally used one from right before that card was released.

Check out the abit forums for Socket 775. Lots of discussion about this board there. There was a guy over there that mentioned a specific voltage for the northbridge on this board when using 4 sticks (over and over...).

I had that problem as well, my seemingly stable overclock would sometimes crash randomly despite being stable for many days prior. It wasn't doing anything strenuous either, IIRC it happened whilst I was opening a video.

Since it occured so rarely it took me a while to figure out the cause. Upping the Vcore an extra 0.025V didn't do anything, and again it crashed after about a week. It turned out that my RAM was 'borderline' stable at my overclock speed so upping the VDIMM an extra 0.05V did the trick, and I haven't had a crash since.

However, in your case since your RAM isn't overclocked it appears the problem may lie with the NB. 4 sticks definitely pushes the NB harder, you may need to increase the MCH voltage a bit to regain stability.

Just wrapping this up:

So it's been about a week since I've gone from 4 DIMMS to 2, and no BSODs. Since I haven't noticed significant performance loss, I'll probably leave it like this for a while. Thanks for the tips, guys!

*sigh*

been having problems with the E2200. I hacked the IHS off thinkn i could get better contact and squeeze a bit more mhz off it. But it was no go.

The new E2xxx series are not showing up as good chips.

After i kill this one, i'll probably grab another one to test it out, thats if wolfdale didnt drop to a price that i like to get one at.

How fast did you manage to get it? I ended up settling on 280x11 at 1.465v. To me, that's a great overclock, but maybe that's because the last time I oc'ed was with a Thunderbird.
