I suspect these people also get kick-backs from Gigabyte and Asus to promote their products.

We used a Gigabyte P35-DS3P, but any cheaper model of the DS3 family or similar products of other brand manufacturers should easily produce similar results.

I just picked up a E2140 and a Gigabyte P-35-DS3R yesterday at frys for 70$ and 130$ respectively.

I deliberately chose to get the cheap core 2 duo based chip and the P-35 chipset. Why you ask?

Penryn.

I am planning on using this chip until I need to upgrade or until the last chips that suppport the P-35 socket 775 mobos are released.

70$ now, and later ill just pop in a shiny new 45nm quad core, who knows maybe even more cores.

Also, this is a huge upgrade over my P4 Northwood 2.8c

My system is 110% stable, and I'm only on 1.3875V in bios. Tom had to use 1.525V.
I would have never caught that. Lot more heat and stress, only 10% but I'm sure its very non-linear.

Thanks

Got my E2140 ($67) on a Gigabyte P35 DS3L ($92) running @ 2.9Ghz stock voltage 50C load in speedfan (65C actual?) orthos stable, but currently stuck. If I never figure out why, I still won't complain about having such a fast processor for that cheap.

Frys.com is Out of Stock and/or unlisted anything less than a E4500. Celerons don't count. :)

Besides, no one delivers to my home . . . 4WD!!! I get my NewEgg UPS deliverys to a friends business.

How important is this RAM to your OC? And why an Abit MB, I thought Gigabit was the OC MB of choice?

Thanks
Hermit

You must have skipped my review of the Abit IP35-E @ the MB forum. This board can hit 500MHz FSB with a one notch bump in VTT, NB, and SB voltages. It's the BEST value among the overclocking P35 boards.

tried that on a quad. It wont work. Need to up the voltage past 2-3 to get it stable on a quad past 400fsb.

jj - your thread inspired me to get an IP35E and a 2140. So far I can get it to 3.0G on stock volts but not 3.2 (can't quite get it Orthos stable, but I'm not sure if it's volts or if it's ram as the instability is kind of odd). This is with the HP cheap value ram deal. I have some better memory but haven't slapped it in yet to see if that will get me to 3.2.

Have to agree.

Could be, popular websites have a lot of muscle these days.

At least they made it clear other MB's will work too. Besides, they used stock cooling which is certainly a budget item.

Bottom line: They did an extensive array of benchmarks which show for a vast number of applications GHz rules and not cache. Which makes the budget OC genre a very valid category. All of these test/reviews are less than perfect, but none the less, useful data points to the intelligent reader.

In a couple of months, when I get into 100's of hours of text to machine language compiling for my project(s), I'll be building a budget OCer.

BTW, Is their a P35 chipset MB with built in graphics? When I do my compling, the monitor won't even be on.

Thanks
Hermit
I think that g33 is the equivalent mobo with built-in gfx.

Need to bump up Vcore to 1.465. Change Vdimm to 2.0 with 5-5-5-15 timing. The HP RAMs should be able to run up to 400MHz.

That's Colorado speak for a mountain above 14,000' in elevation. Chances are you'll recognize Pikes Peak, can't see it. Colorado has 54 Fourteeners scattered about the state.

Sure enough found a bunch of G33 MB's over at the Egg. Almost all uATX and with limited or no OC ability. I really need RAM ratioing for my budget DDR2. Besides they aren't that cheap so looks like I'll need to add that $30 PCIx VGA card . . . No big deal.

Thanks

most of the baords are not very good for o/c compared to the enthusiast p35 boards. the gigabyte g33s are supposed to be fairly good for o/c ing though. if you really want to get a g33 o/c board, there is one gigabyt emodel that has the solid caps too

I"m building a 2140 based system also....
Heres what I have so far.

Case: Coolmaster rc 690- 59.99$
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/...p?ProductCode=10006342

Psu: Etasis et850-159.00$
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817608007

cpu: 2140 Mo stepping-72.50$
http://www.clubit.com/product_...il.cfm?itemno=A1938282

cooler: coolmaster tx2-20.00$

video:XFX 8800gts fata1lity 320mb-329.00$ (gaming at 1280x1024)
http://www.tigerdirect.com/app...=3335390&sku=P450-8806

My question is about ram (4gigs) . What ram would be good for this (2140) cpu and when I upgrade to the new Penryn cpu's next year. I don't want to buy ram again.
Yes I will overclock both cpu's.
Thanks
