E2000 End node/hub

A (hopefully) simple question.

I just replaced my WRT54GS with an E3000 router and things seem to be working fine.

What I want to do now is take an E2000 and use it as a wireless node/hub at the "other end" of the "n"etwork.

I don't seem to be able to set the damn thing up to just act as a node and not a wireless router (by making it connect to another network). Any clue on how to do this?

Also, will I be able to do the same with the WRT54?

ANY help would be appreciated!

TIA

Explain:

Turn it into an AP? (assign a static ip, disable dhcp, plug lan cable in any port other than WAN)

Turn it into an AP CLIENT (joins wifi network, dishes out ethernet connections) ?

Thanks for the quick response.

I already have the E3000 set up to dole out the IP's, so I guess I do not need to have it as a Client (please correct me if I am wrong).

Setup now is:

-Verizon router
---Computer 1
---Computer 2/Server
---E3000
-----Slimline Music Player (2) (g)
-----HTPC (Hopefully this will be what hooks up to the E2000 on 802.11n)
-----Laptop (n)
-----Xbox360 (another for the E2000).

TIA!

stuff -> ethernet -> AP client -> WIFI -> ROUTER -> interwebs

stuff -> wifi- > AP -> ethernet cable -> router -> wifi -> stuff
(plus router goes to interwebs)

which drawing?

Hard to say.

I have the Verizon router hooked up to, obviously, the Web.

I then have the E3000 hooked to it through the "internet" connection on the back.

It connects through three giga ports to:
One power line network router
One server
One gaming machine/Main machine.

The WiFi goes out and I want it to connect to:
1 laptop
2 Slimline (logitech) music servers/players
1 E2000 router (which will be the AP for an HTPC and XBox 360)
1 WRT54g (that will act as the AP for a WD media player)

How can I set up the E2000 and the WRT to simply route the signal back to the main E3000 and let it sort out the traffic/IP assignment and management?

OK, DD-WRT seemed to take, but no changes seem to stick on the web interface... Just trying to figure out how to turn this E2000 into an "n" bridge/AP......

More information:

I followed the instructions on the dd-wrt wiki, but I seem to be getting some problems with the E2000.

First off, the router is still on the default 192.168.1.1 setting.

The E3000 is set up pretty much as default (I will check to see whether the DNS and Gateway are set to 192.168.1.1). ITS address is 192.168.2.1, and it works.

I tried resetting it to 192.168.1.100, no go... But I think that is the address as a default for one of the cable boxes (or maybe that is only with Optimum, not Verizon). I then tried 192.168.1.69, again, all internet access got blocked. I reset it to 192.168.2.1 and it was fine.

But now I am trying to change the IP on the E2000. It will accept 192.168.1.1 and 10, but as soon as I try to give it any 192.168.2.###, I can't log back in and get into the web control panel anymore... I have no clue why.

I believe you need to assign that "2" to match the base unit's IP or the bridge will not work....

This is what I am trying to do:

E2000 and WRT54g should be in client-AP mode, join the main wifi, and use ethernet to connect to the htpc/xb360 and wd media player.

in AP CLIENT mode - think of the those routers are VERY powerful wifi cards with ethernet out

I will have to look again about client-ap mode. I am setting it up as such, but for some reason the machine cannot see the network (even when I specify a channel for the 5GHz band).

One other thing I noticed though... The Cisco E3000 seems to have, I think, a channel 153, but the dd-WRT has channel 154. Any reason for mis-matching channel choices?

-TIA!

You don't want to assign the LAN IPs of both routers to the same IP address, that's bad.

I don't know about client mode wireless, but for WDS mode (similar wireless bridging feature), my main router is 192.168.2.1, and my secondary WDS router is 192.168.2.2.

Thanks VL...

I need to keep giving this a go a bit at a time. I have a wireless NIC (g) in my HTPC, but I would like to just hook up a wireless router to grab that unused 5GHz band I now have and split it to the XBox, HTPC and anything else (that ouma.., whatever phone service?)

I will let you guys know if anything else develops, but this is just a bit frustrating as everything else seems to be working fine now (after changing the wireless callouts as #1 and #2 rather than the same network name)....
