it seems like this phone is finally out and the reviews aren't too bad. it has just about everything i wanted in a pda phone, although it definitely seems short on RAM. still i don't think there's anything else on the market that has VGA (640x480) resolution, gps, wifi, bluetooth, qwerty, etc...

anyone own this thing? will I just be able to take my AT&T sim card and drop it in? anything better that's out with the same features?

EDIT ---> looks like it can be had for about $650 on expansys... not cheap, but for an unlocked phone w/ this many features, not too bad. also for $675 via amazon, although it says it's sold via expansys as well... dunno if i trust expansys - i wonder if amazon offers any fraud protection if you buy through them?

I have no experience with the phone, but if it's unlocked you'll be able to put in any sim card and it'll work just fine.

It's quad band, so you should have no reception issues with ATT.

I know ATT's network is pretty big on GSM 850, so definitely stick with quad band phones if you decide to go with something else.

thx for the info. i had figured as much from reading online, so i ordered the phone a few days ago. I'll post a review once I get it and have some time to play around with it.

There's nothing "better" that I know of, although if price is a factor at all to you, you could get a Tilt and save a bundle. Aside from VGA res, they're practically the same.

Heck, if GPS isn't important to you an 8525 can be had for cheap these days.

All that said, I don't like slider phones. Unless you cycle through your phones in 6mo to 1yr, or you barely use the keyboard, the slide will wear out and the keyboard won't stay locked in either position. I've got an 8125 that the keyboard doesn't stay in place on. It's a friction locking mechanism, so once the friction ball has worn a deeper groove into the slide, there's no repairing it outside of a new keyboard.

I've got smartphone fever too, but I'm sitting still until I see what the 3g iPhone is going to bring to the table and the price on it.

I highly recommend the Treo 750. I go back and forth between it and the Samsung Blackjack. FWIW, the Blackjacks are nearly indestructible - inside the keyboard, screen, motherboard, and radio are all one mega PCB. The Treo is a bunch of seperate components. Upshot: cleaning spills is super-easy on the Blackjack and nearly impossible on the Treo. I'd go so far as to say the Treo is not user repairable, even by experienced individuals.

Hope this helps!

the VGA resolution really is a sticking point for me. The Tilt (aka Tytn II) is a very solid phone, but I found the QVGA resolution painful: surfing the web was irritating (granted, a better browser could've helped), viewing any kind of document meant tons of scrolling and in general, very little fit on the screen. I know I'm being stubborn, but after using my friend's Dell Axim, I just couldn't imagine having less than VGA resolution.

GPS is another must-have. I've been needing it for a while and I really don't want to have to carry a second device for it.

The complete requirement list, btw:

* VGA touch screen
* GPS
* QWERTY keyboard
* World phone
* Bluetooth
* Wifi
* Memory card slot

hmm, that sounds like a PITA. i haven't heard that from the eten reviews i've read, but i guess it hasn't been out long, so ppl prob haven't run into it yet.

I've checked out the Treos and Blackjacks and again, GPS and/or VGA is always lacking. The only real competition this eten had that met my requirements were:

* HTC Advantage: has everything I need (gps, vga, quad band, qwerty, bluetooth, etc) plus more (16gb HD) but is WAY too big.
* i-mate ultimate 9502: the whole i-mate ultimate series seemed to be vaporware for a long time, so I wasn't sure they'd ever come out. I finally saw a review on cnet which wasn't too bad, so maybe this phone was worth waiting for.
* Sony Ericsson Experia X1: beautiful phone with almost identical specs to the m800 but with a bit more RAM. unfortunately, I heard this phone might be delayed till 2009, and I needed a phone now.

Well, I don't know what to tell you then. You've pretty much made the requirements so that the Eten is the only phone that will fit for you.

Since WM6 isn't on your list, I'd at least wait until the specs for the 3g iPhone are announced. If nothing else, it might drive down the price on the model you're looking at.

Good luck

I have an HTC 6800 (Sprint Mogul) with a sliding keyboard and it's locking mechanism is actually spring based, not friction based. I don't foresee it wearing out anytime soon.

And yeah, what is it with all these PDA phones with such little RAM???

You _might_ want to wait for the HTC Diamond and its GSM counterpart, which supposedly have VGA screens.

well, the m800 arrived today and im writing this message on it. i need to use it a lot more before i post a full review, but so far im impressed. i really like the vga screen (although i havent tried it outside yet), the keyboard is very easy to type on, wifi works great, and im already using the calendar and tasks to plan my day.

the device is smaller than i expected and looks quite nice. my 4gb card works just fine. phone calls worked w no issues as well. once i install tom tom, ill try out the gps. stay tuned for more later.

after 1.5 days of using it, i still can't do a full review, but can add the following:

* GPS works just fine. Takes < 1 min to connect, which is comparable to what I've seen on standalone GPS units and my friend's external bluetooth GPS.
* I used the GPS with tom-tom and had no issues.
* I was able to use bluetooth to connect to my macbook pro (work computer) w/o a problem. Now I just need to find a way to sync iCal (work), google calendar (home) and windows mobile calendar together...
* I downloaded a google maps application, but it doesn't seem to find a network connection, even though I was connected via wifi. maybe it only works over gprs?
* As a result, I downloaded a second google maps application that runs in a java (jbed) environment i installed. This one works, but is pretty damn slow and seems to crash occasionally.
* I installed opera mini in a jbed environment. Works ok and displays some pages better than IE. Overall, web browsing is ok.
* Youtube does not work. You can browse to the mobile youtube site just fine, but when you click on a movie, WMP comes up and says it can't handle rtsp streams. Blah.
* The touch screen is great - no problems using it with either fingers or stylus.
* Once you get used to the keyboard, you can type pretty damn fast. I was surprised especially at how few mistakes I made - I virtually always hit the right button, even though they aren't that big. MUCH better than the iphone's touch screen keyboard.
* The touch sensitive buttons below the screen are terrible. They are hard to use, hard to guess what they do and way too easy to touch by accident. Normal buttons (or even, no buttons at all) would have been way better.
* The camera is pretty damn crappy. It takes a while to start, a while to take each picture and the pics come out pretty blurry. It can also shoot videos, but they are very low fps (15?), low res (320x240 max) and twitchy.
* The carrying case that comes with it is so-so. It attaches nicely to a belt and isn't too bulky, but it's not tiny either. Unfortunately, the phone is largely unusable while in it - you can't see the screen or do anything until you take it out. This is a bit difficult since it's a fairly tight fit around the phone, and you often open the slider mechanism while trying to pull the phone out.
* The phone works just fine with the 4gb micro SDHC card, although the tiny things are a bit annoying to handle - they are hard to grab on to and can be tough to pull out of the phone and the SD adapter that came with card.
* The phone came with a wired headset. It works ok, but given the phone has bluetooth, I would definitely replace it with a wireless one.
* I'm still testing battery life, but here's what I found so far: after (roughly) 2-3 hours of installing apps, surfing the web, trying to watch videos, using the gps, trying out google maps, the battery drains to ~35%. I'd say you have ~4 hours of moderate usage of all the "fancy" apps before you need to charge the phone. I can't judge how much "talk time" you have as I've only placed a few short calls. Standby time seems very solid, eating virtually no battery while still accepting incoming calls, firing off reminders, etc.

Got some good news and some bad news.

The good:

* Resco explorer 2007 is a great app and runs fine on the m800
* Fring is a nice free chat client that I was able to use to IM ppl over WIFI
* Google maps updated itself and is now working very well
* I installed "magic button" which properly closes programs - freeing up RAM as it does - and gives you a taskbar at the top. everything runs a bit smoother now and the phone is more usable.

The bad:

* Out of the blue, I can no longer place/receive calls properly! It worked just fine the first couple of days, but today, I got a call, answered it and... nothing. No sound, no static, just silence. The person called back and the same thing happened. I then tried to call them - and a couple of other people for good measure - and each time, it just beeps twice, sits there, and then disconnects. I get at most one ringtone. I have 4 bars of reception here, so it's not that, and I seem to be able to send text messages. But calls are a no go. I cannot think of any reason for this either :(
* A couple times while using the phone, the wifi was disabled. However, I didn't notice, and the phone instead switched to using my data plan. Problem is... I don't have one! Or, to be more specific, I only have the "pay per use" BS that comes with a normal cell phone plan and is bloody expensive. I think it's going to cost me $5, which isn't that big of a deal, but it could've been much worse! AT&T and MS are both to blame for this - AT&T for just letting you use this data plan without ANY confirmation/approval and MS even more for not warning you or informing you how the data is getting to the phone. There doesn't even seem to be a way to say "don't use the cellular data plan" - if you are connected to gprs, it'll just do it.
