I'm glad we don't negotiate with terrorists. I feel very awful for that guy being held captive and his family, but we can't give into demands like releasing detainees at Guantanamo. They'll just end up taking more lives.

I would have been suprised if they had released him. It seemed that the kidnappers wanted to have too much "fun" with their victim. Feel bad for his family. Wonder if this will affect reporting in the region in a significant way.

Oh, do you happen to have the home address of the jerks that are holding him hostage? Please forward it to our assets on the ground over there, then, as they are still trying to track down where he is being held.

If you had actually read the story, you would see that they already have some suspects in custody, due to cell phone traces.

They need russel crowe in there doing some K&R :|

Really though what can you do? Either you find the guy or see what the group does; negotiation with kidnappers is a bad thing to do. You win the battle but lose the war. On a personal basis it's ok (like if this guy can get money together), but as a government policy a non-negotiation is the only way to work. That's why I'm shocked India gave in to kidnappers when those terrorists hijacked a plane a year or two back.

As if we can just stroll into the back of a local 7-11 and pick this guy up. Please. If you seriously think that the U.S hasn't tried someway of getting this guy out other than meeting their demands, then I don't know what to think of you.

Shows how bloody stupid these people are anyway. As if the gov't was really going to release captives because one guy was held hostage. :|

Exactly. I mean c'mon, our military intelligence is decent, but they're not magicians. It's sad that the guy is dead (if it turns out to be accurate), but there's nothing that Bush could have done. Get a clue.

i mean this is just another terrorists act like the airplanes going through the WTC. i mean even losing one US life to terrorism is very very sad. he went out on his own good will to do his job and thinking that he would be home soon to see his child born, then get captured, that just f'n sucks man.

well i hope they find the peoples house soon. ill keep him in my prayers.

also im watching cnn and they just mention that they were going to extend the execution to 24 hours, meaning they pussy'd out didn't they? i mean HEY IM GONNA KILL HIM IN 24 HOURS... RELEASE SO AND SO... HMM 24 HOURS COMES AROUND.... WTF NO RELEASE? CRAP THEY WONT GIVE IN!!!! WELL WE'LL GIVE YOU 24 MORE HOURS BECAUSE WE'RE VERY STUPID, AND THINK YOU'LL RELEASE THE PRISONERS!

you'll be in my prayers man. pray for the best and we all hope you make it out.

He was doing a story on "shoe bomber" Richard Reid, and was there to gather background information.

If anyone thinks Bush was sitting on his a$$, chewing pretzels and not doing anything else during this whole hostage situation, then you're clueless. I don't exactly have contacts in the Pentagon et al, but they handle covert search and rescue operations in situations like this all the time. I could say with pretty good certainty that there were soldiers out searching for Pearl. Yeah, politicians are scum, but they're also human beings - do you think they're sitting around high-fiving each other about this mess?

Read the full story, they have one e-mail saying he is dead, and another asking for $2,000,000.00. Their is no hard confirmation yet, so he could be alive.

If true, then my condolences go out to his family. :(

That said, Bush did the right thing. Never negotiate with terrorists.

If I was being held hostage, I would not expect the US Goverment to give into demands. I would do my best to escape and not to give them anything the could use for propaganda. That's all anyone can do.
