Please move this to a forum more appropriate. I haven't been able to make up my mind on that point.
I want to write to my congressman about this.
I've had internet provision from CHARTER-then-SPECTRUM for maybe 22 years. I had created three different e-mail accounts with the charter.net domain, and use those accounts for specific and different kinds of correspondence.
I'm temporarily losing Social Security income for 12 months because of IRMAA surcharges to MEdicare B premiums arising from an income spike in selling a house in 2024. So I'm trimming my 2026 budget, looking for opportunities while avoiding a loss of lifestyle.
At first, I was thinking to switch my Verizon cell subscription to Spectrum, who had offered some "bargain deal" with a lock on monthly subscription price for everything -- internet, landline and cellphone.
I went to VErizon to see about canceling my account and the cost of doing so. I'm still paying for my Samsung Android phone. It will cost me a bundle.
Then the Verizon guy at their store pitched to me the idea of getting internet from Verizon instead, offering me the equipment and access on a trial basis. We talked about switching from Spectrum to Verizon, and it all looked easy, simply and good. But then, I remembered the e-mail accounts. I have a database table of 69 account IDs and passwords with entities who correspond with me using one of the three Spectrum e-mail addresses.
Verizon guy says I could just keep the Spectrum landline and I could also keep the three e-mail accounts. I drove over to Spectrum. At least for their counter representative, who consulted his supervisor, it was "no cigar".
What I think I need to do is this. I should create three GMAIL accounts with similar name prefixes to the CHARTER accounts. Then I should access each reseller and financial entity in that list until all the contact information has converted e-mail addresses to the GMAIL. I should of course e-mail all of my friends with the new address or addresses. "ACTUNG, ACTUNG! My e-mail address has changed!"
THEN -- I should cancel Spectrum and give Verizon my landline and internet subscription.
ANYONE EVER BEEN THROUGH THIS? WHAT DO YOU THINK? OTHERWISE, I continue to pay "appropriable quasi-rents" to what is essentially a monopolist, or don't you agree?
