If you decide to go the Dyson route the refurbs have a price tag that is MUCH easier to swallow ($250 on Amazon).

We've been very happy with ours.

Is it worth $250? Definitely. Is it worth $500 or more?

Doubtful.

No more expensive than a conventional vac for hardware. Installation is another matter though.

This is the main reason I am looking forward to having one. It cost me substantially more than a conventional vac though.

Do people NOT notice what machines are used in libraries, restaurants, and movie theaters? Quiet is what I was looking for when I bought my first decent vacuum in the late 80's. I saw more than one Panasonic, which was quiet. A local dealer sold me a Riccar, which was identical, but cheaper.

I replaced it in 2001 with a Sharp Twin Energy EC-T5970, which is still working fine and fairly quietly. Their commercial units are quieter.

Dyson is made out of plastic. The thing is made to look flashy and pretty for uninformed consumers. I read a review (believe it was Consumer Reports) that said the Dyson was significantly less powerful than a $200 Hoover.

But, I would buy a Royal or other commercial vacuum cleaner.. They're made with metal parts and don't smell like burning plastic when used for long periods of time. There's a reason you don't see maids in large hotel areas vacuuming everything with a Dyson.

Kirby's are good too.. but they're really just commercial vacuums sold to residential households with a couple flashy gadgets added to them. The salesmen easily wow a typical consumer because there's a huge difference between residential offerings of vacuum cleaners (pretty plastic, cute gadgets, super cool commercials) and commercial vacuum cleaners (plain, made out of metal, haven't changed in 30 years).

The people recommending commercial vacuums know what they're doing, imo..

Sometimes, the 'residential' model of a product just can't compare to a commercial model.. and residential models sometimes get more expensive than a far superior commercial model..

Some examples:

- vacuum cleaners
- coffee/espresso makers
- pots/pans/oven dishes
- dishwashers
- refrigerators

yeah $600 would pay for maid service for 6 months

How the hell do you expect the maid to clean up? with her tongue?? no, she'd need a VACUMM so there you go.

My wife has killed 2 Phantoms in a year, and has yet to kill her Dyson in 1.5 years.

So for our family it's worth it.

All I can say is it beats the crap out of my 2000 dollar canister vac. pulls out more dirt, the carpetes are cleaner, and no expensive filters to change constantly.

everybody has an opintion of course, and consumer reports is the last place to look for real information.

-edit- jeez, talk about poor spelling, anyway I have white carpets so its very easy to see the difference.

My mother-in-law had an Oreck, which she used in her own home as well as a few other homes she cleaned for extra bucks. She liked it because of the very light weight. It died within ten years, but I don't know what failed. I think it was the motor bearings.

Well, she replaced that with a Simplicity, but missed the light weight of the Oreck. God, I hope she didn't pay over $200.00 for the silly thing!

You get what you pay for...

Oh, really?

Don't forget Bose...

It's a little annoying hearing these clowns pick on the OP's English. WTF is wrong with people around here? And it's Christmas on top of that, sheesh!

Ive tried several brands on the same carpet. When my Hoover died, I tried the Dyson, and I love it. Since it's used in the same setting as others, I've found it superior to the others.

You sound like Sharper Image.. "Everyone has their opinion". As if it makes a difference that cognitive dissonance causes people to believe their Ionic Breezes,
Dysons, and Bose stereos are worth the money.

When I find a 5-600 dollar vacuum that I have personally owned that stomps the crap out of my 2K canister vac - you betcha I'm gonna preach.

We're talking a CHEAP vacuum cleaner here, not an overpriced one. And it so happens in my experience of actually using and owning both (as opposed to reading something on the intarweb) it is well worth the money.

This is my personal experience. You simply cannot believe the stuff this thing picks up that the canister vac doesn't. All in a very inexpensive vacuum cleaner.

At a home and builders show they had a vacuume cleaner booth, the yellow dyson was one of the models being sold there. You were free to try out the cleaners on the small strips of carpet, vinyl, hardwood and pergo flooring they had there. I wasn't overly impressed with the dyson. It sucked up the particles on the rug just like all the other vacuum cleaners. It didn't do anything magical to warrant spending $600 on it. I suppose that mabey after a lot of vacuuming the sucktion may be a bit better, but is it really that hard to just empty the container on the vacuum? My $60 walmart eureka bagless works just as well when the container isn't full.

The major difference is between the bagless container cleaners and the bagged cleaners. But I see no reason why the dyson is so much more expensive.

damn I wish I could come up with some idea like Dyson. How many people blindly pay 400+ bucks for one of their Vacuums? I know a few people who own one, and all 3 tell me "they pick up more dirt then my <insert brand> ever did" I don't think they do any real tests to verify this. :) My moms Kurby pwns all over a Dyson, it's older then dirt. And of course it weights about 40 pounds and will cause Carpel Tunnel because it's are so heavy and hard to move.

While I have never used an Electrolux vacuume, they look nice. Saw one at Lowes, was like 350'ish (expensive) anyone know how they work?

I've said it before and I'll say it again... get a Hoover Fusion from Walmart for $128. Cleans 16% better than the Dyson's at a much lower cost. I've already convinced at least 3 other people to buy one after they've seen mine and tried one in their own house. Plus at $128 and considering it comes from Walmart so if you want to return it you can you've got nothing to lose.

Sheesh I sound like a vacuum salesman. :Q

My grandparents have a Kirby that's at least 25 years old, probably closer to 30. Still works perfectly. My mom bought one about a year ago, it cleans well in normal mode but even she admits she'll never use 95% of the accessories.

I'll probably get a Kirby whenever I get around to buying a house, but for now I won't get anything more expensive than that WalMart Hoover above.
