We have the Dyson DC-14 and love it. I think we had the DC-12 or DC-13 previously to the 14 and it was had more power/suction, but this one had a couple of new features worth trading in for.

I have a Dyson and love it. Can't remember the model though but it's the cheapest one they make.

If you have primarily wood floors don't bother. We have the Dyson Animal, I don't know the model number, but its great for carpets. When we were renting an apartment the whole thing was carpeted and our golden retriever sheds like crazy. The dog hair collected into the carpet, but the Dyson picked up almost every piece of hair he left behind. Now we have moved and have a house with hard wood floors and forget about using the Dyson. It blows hair around more than it picks up.

Undoubtedly. My parents have a Dyson, and it manages to do all kinds of things that most vacuums wouldn't be able to do (namely, vacuum). I know several other families with them too... they're simply awesome.

at best buy we all use dyson vacuum cleaners.

please spend your money elsewhere. i dont see anything special about them at all. a cheaper one did the same amount of cleaning. now if you have allergies or something maybe the dyson is better but based on raw cleaning power i dont feel like its anything special.

i have tried all models except that new ball model.

From what I've read (someone posted consumer reports pdfs here a while back), it's not worth the money.

It is by all those who've bought one. Personally, I'd recommend that you get something cheaper. It has been proven that they don't pick up dirt any better than some of the $100-150 vacuum cleaners do.

I havent found anything better at pickup then my less than $100 Eureka Whirlwind. Its 3 years old now and has a HEPA filter. Picks up cat hair like a champ and when I first moved to my flat there were fleas everywhere. About 2 complete runs of the carpet and all the fleas including the eggs were gone.

I dont understand why anyone would pay more than $100 for a vacuum

Central vac >*.

Biggest advantage everyone that does not have one overlooks: the air used to remove dirt is vented OUTSIDE. No more sweaty socks smell! Pet owners really notice this.

No more expensive than a conventional vac for hardware. Installation is another matter though.

I dunno about that but years ago I had an electrikbroom that had the impeller BEFORE the pickup cup. :roll: Sucked up a jack and it broke a blade off the impeller. Off balance spinning impeller at ~12,000 rev/min = 1 noisy sumbitch! The thing sounded like an air raid siren on ketamine. :laugh:

Our house has the "infrastructure?" for a central vac but we haven't bought a machine for it...

There are other expensive vaccuum cleaners (Oreck anyone?) but I don't know if I'll never buy a vaccuum that's over $200! Life's short, waste your money on something else other than a cleaning apparatus.

Got a dirt devil for downstairs and another dirt devil upstairs. they are both oer 5yrs old, so could use a new one...with al the cats I have. I am not sure what I want, though. I ave heard that bagless do not clean as well as bagged, but i worry that i will spend hundreds on a vacuum and then they will stop making it and i will not be able to get bags for it.

I alway like canister vacuums better than uprights, but they are not as popular these days.

If it's already wired and piped you could do it what some folks refer to "ghetto":

Purchase a decent wet/dry vac and connect the suction side to your pipe home location. Connect a hose to the side that blows and pass this through a hole in the wall.

Possibly the most difficult part is getting it to turn on when a hose is plugged in. Find someone that knows how to wire a double pole relay that can carry the current of the motor and have this wired with a bell transformer. This should work darn well near as good as a real central vac and could cost under $100!
