I know a guy who works at a Hoover store. They use an old Dyson that someone traded in to clean the store at night.

As a guy, I never thought I'd ever think paying over $200 for a vacuum cleaner was acceptable, until I bought a refurb dyson dc14 from woot. That thing is the straight shit. The commercial is right, it never loses suction. No nasty filters or bags to deal with either. I  my dyson.

Another one "SUCKED" in by infomercials!
I'm sure you love your Bose speakers and Sharper Image air "purifiers" too

sucked in by commercials?

have you ever owned a dyson? i'm a believer, and i don't think i ever watched a single commercial. does dyson even have infomercials?

We have had our DC07 since February 2004 and since we have a house full of dogs and cats the thing gets very heavy usage. We would not hesitate to buy another one; it is hands down the best performing vacuum we have owned. The only problem we have noticed is that the hose does not stand up quite as well as we would like to the heavy usage but they are not all that expensive to replace so it is a minor issue for us.

nope. looking at consumer reports ratings the dysons never come up tops. they have good marketing and are nicely designed for looks. and well, people pay for looks:p

I wouldn't say so. A guy I've gotten to know who owns a vacuum store told me he only sells them because the markup is stupidly high so he makes a good profit on each one, but that they're not that great. I don't know how accurate it would be to call them the Monster Cables of the vacuum world, but that's how I look at it.

/THREAD!
I paid $140. for my Eureka Boss 4870, and it cleans alot better than all of the crappy dysons. I actually have 2 of them. One for the outside porch where the cats stay most of the time, and one for the inside of the house.

(snippet......)
Reviewers say the Eureka SmartVac 4870GZ is the best value in a bagging upright vacuum cleaner, cleaning as well or better than more expensive models and doing a very good job of picking up pet hair on carpeting. However, at 20 pounds, this vacuum can be cumbersome to push and hard to carry up and down stairs.

It's funny, because they say it's hard to push? The thing pulls forward! If I let it go and it held the same handle position, it would go on it's own

It's the best overall vacuum out there!

I bought the same vacuum. It works well enough, but my wife hates it because it weighs so much.

i got one from w00t also. the only people who say they have a cleaner better than dyson have never owned a dyson.

and how easy is it to empty that chamber when it gets full of dirt? madeasy.

*shrug*

The guy I mentioned earlier in the thread sells multi-thousand dollar vacuums to hospitals that need ridiculously thorough cleaning, so I assume he knows good from bad. The Panasonic he sold me works great. It really sucks!

and the people that are wowed by dyson are generally comparing to their last old worn and cr@ppy vacumn:p plus theres the psychological effect where people are primed to think good looking stuff works better. and then theres the self rationalization of purchase effect..and so mr dyson keeps rakin it in...

While the Dysons ARE nice vacuums, my $80 shopvac kicks the hell out of my wife's $600 Dyson. Even she will agree to that.

That definitely has some good reviews. I might have to look into this vacuum. I was looking at Dyson, but I could save some moola getting this one instead of the Dyson Ball... Hrmmm....
