Dynamic IP versus Static IP on a CABLE Optimum Online setup...?

What would be a disadvantage of a Dynamic IP versus a Static IP if I wanted to host either a gaming server or just a regular Website?.....can it even be done with a Dynamic IP???....Are there any restricting factors that Optimum Online can impose to prevent it ??

any ideas?

Since the dynamic can change everytime you log on, it can make it a hassle for people to connect to your game server. With static, you don't have that problem. Make sure your ISP will let you have a server on your connection. Some ISPs won't let and mine will let you as long as it is not for profit.

You can also get a redirect service that will give you an address like you.tzo.com and will redirect anyone to your computer. I use www.tzo.com and thay have service which costs $25 a year to have them redirect. You can also find free redirect services, but I am not sure as to who they are.

Optimum uses a dynamic IP system, but I've had about 4 IP's in the last 3 years. You only loose the IP if you turn off your modem for pro-longed periods of time.

Guilty...SAY IT AINT SO...SAY IT AINT SO!!

This is awesome!!.....are you pullin my package here????

fantastic!....you eggzagerating a bit?

if it's dynamic than try a free DNS services like dyndns.org. Been using it and it's free.

Yeah I'm serious, I've even left my modem off while sleeping and the IP still didnt change, infact I wanted it to change.

It depends quite a bit on your ISP as well. I had one service(?) that would actually monitor the connections and if one was idle for any amount of time, the ISP would snatch the IP address back from the modem and give it to someone else, forcing the modem to get a new IP address every few HOURS or less, depending on usage... :|

Needless to say, we didn't use that ISP for very long, but if your ISP will allow you to run a server on your system, then it's quite possible that they could also be talked into letting you have a static IP address... 😉

I'm on a cable modem service, it rarely goes out if ever. That's when I use to have an IP change. Or if the DHCP server alone went out, I'd have an IP change. Other than that, my IP usually wouldn't change unless I powered off my cable modem for extended periods of or if I changed my network card 🙂
