Dymo recently introduced a line of label printers that
attach to your computer (serial or USB port). When
I first heard about these I thought "snore". But a couple
of weeks ago I was visiting a friend and had to print
out a few shipping labels, and I was won over. It's not
that you can't print out labels with a standard printer,
but this thing is so much more convenient. Plus no
toner/inks to worry about. And it interfaces with
all standard programs.

FWIW.

Anyway, Buy.com has the entry level EL40 (compatible
with both Mac and Windows) for $128.95. You can use a
$20/100 c*upon (see other sites). PLUS, there's a $50
rebate on this printer. And free shipping. So $59 after
all is said and done.

Personally, I went for the EL60. The main advantage of the
EL60 is that it can printer out wide labels, so it can
be used with internet postage apps like estamp.com and
stamps.com. That one will run your $93.95 after a $30/150
c*upon and the $50 rebate.

There's also a "turbo" model that'll cost you $40 more
than the EL60, but the only difference between the turbo
and the EL60 is print speed (12 labels/minute vs 30 labels/
minute). I'm not running a direct mailing biz, so the
speed wasn't worth the cost.

I just drop in stacks of 10 envelops into my DeskJet printer.....

Prints out return address, shipping address (from excel file for mailing lists, along with barcodes that speed delievery upto a day quicker.

Heck...maybe if I tied in one of those "print postage from your computer" programs/services, it'd be a one shot deal.

Another advantage of using your printer, is that I can print all sorts of graphics and images on the envelope itself...front and back.

What do you mean you don't have to worry about toner and inks? Doesn't this mini printer require ink?

No, it uses some kind of thermal printing method. The labels
look very good--good enough for labels, anyway.

As for "needing" one of these: Sure, I have several printers,
and I can print to envelopes/labels that I stack into any of them.
But I find this label printer is simply easier--I don't have to
worry about changing the paper size in setup, I don't have to
worry about feed problems with weird label stock, whatever.

Like I said originally, this isn't a MUST HAVE item. But I find
it a very convenient item to have. Candy, not food, for the
techno soul.

Hot deal if you need one. I was reading about these in Entrepreneur... Nice little devices. I do a fair amount of selling stuff on the 'bay (got rid of my DVD collection, trying to simplify) and man it was a pain in the butt figuring out who got shipped what with 20+ different packages (all the auctions ended pretty close together too, last time I do that).

The other pain on the 'bay is that people use 1 email address for 'bay, another email address to contact you after they win or reply, and yet another for paypal... Talk about needing some good book keeping.

Er.. Jeeze, sorry for the ramble. Point is one of these would come in handy but I gotta wait until they are dirt cheap.

Souka: You got some links on that bar code stuff for speeding things up? Is that zip+4? Must have more information.
