Dying hard drive

I've been using a new Maxtor Diamondmax 46GB/7200RPM since last summer, and it's been acting a bit wierd lately. For the last few weeks, it sometimes clicks a few times, loudly, on startup, and two weeks ago it had to boot twice to detect it. This morning, it made a screeching sound the first time I booted, and on the third try it was detected. It sounds like it's dying, but could it last a bit longer or will it be gone soon?

At least I'll get another 34GB if it dies 🙂 (80GB/7200RPM/250CDN)

Sounds to me like you need to do a backup.....and soon!
If it went from a small click to a screeching noise then failure is probably right around the corner.

Go get another drive as soon as you can!

To be on the safe side, assume soon! Sure, if the hard drive God looks on you lightly, it might last a while - but if he was doing that, you wouldn't have this problem in the first place.

New Noises = Bad with hard drives. It's probably going to go soon.
