MS has clearly done a better job marketing Win7 though, and the open Beta is certainly a big step in improving adoption/acceptance when it goes RTM.
Windows 7 is more than just marketing. There have been measurable improvements to performance, memory footprint and disk access over Vista.
I didn't claim Win7 was just marketing, I said MS was doing a better job marketing their new OS this time around. Also, while I'm sure RTM will close the gap, there's also measurable deficiencies with Win7 compared to Vista.

For the first time since Windows XP I am starting to get optimistic about upgrading from Windows XP

I agree, infact UAC is the same in Win7 as in Vista,
No true - Windows 7?s UAC is configurable beyond a simple on/off switch.

I know its configurable ,even Vista version is configurable to a point if you download TWEAKUAC,my point which I did not make clear was its about the same as Vista when it comes to warning you,I have Win7 and Vista with same software more or less and can't see any difference in the amount of warnings.

Again UAC is not a big deal, recommend you keep it on.

what's the diff between 7 and Vista

7 is what Vista was supposed to be, and actually probably has fewer bugs. :)

It's faster and less annoying. They fixed the major annoyances with UAC. It boots fast. Programs load up instantly. It doesn't have the problems with disk performance.

Basically I use it daily now. It's better than XP and Vista. :)

Turn off UAC and no more annoyances. I'm reluctant to jump on Windows 7 because I don't want to see some of the apps I have just flat out not run and drivers not work properly.

We will see.

If it works on Vista it'll work on 7.

Nope. When you install DX9 and then try to run it, it'll fail to load and say to install RealPlayer. When you install RealPlayer and then try to run it, it'll fail to load and say to install Bonzai Buddy, and on and on.

You can't play C&C3 on Windows 7 at all; it's just saying to install DX9 for shits and giggles

;) :p

I'm waiting for the second beta before using it as a main everyday OS, the current version gives me lots of problems with MP3's, Winamp, RivaTuner, Medieval II: TW and some of my Steam games (old ones, like Natural Selection, which is OpenGL).

Well yeah, given it's a beta there are bound to be issues at this time, so this is quite an obvious observation.

But it's painfully clear from Microsoft's engineers that they spent a lot of time addressing Vista's serious shortcomings, especially with regards to bloat and performance.

For everyone talking about quick boot times. Is 7 faster than Vista or XP was when they were first installed fresh? In my experience both those OS's booted fast before all the windows updates and service packs were added. After they were applied boot times went to hell in a handbag!

It always does. Fresh base install is the fastest you'll ever get. The more you install, the slower it boots and the slower it everything-elses.

Your PC blows up Aug. 1st 2009.

Fresh install of XP > Fresh install of Win7 > Fresh Install of Vista.

Also, Win7 install, at least for me, was about 50x faster than Vista install.
