it gets exactly halfway through loading one of the russian missions, and i get a DX9 error that says:

"DirectX Error DirectX has encountered an unrecoverable error. Please check DirectX Help document for possible details."

all the tests in dxdiag run fine. i went to microsoft.com/directx, and downloaded the latest directx version. right at the end of installation i get an error that says:

"An internal error occured. Please refer to DXError.log and DirectX.log in your Windows folder to determine problem."

this is what is in DXError.log:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What version directx do you have again? I play cod2 all the time. Ive played with dx9 and dx7. Never had any problems with either.

Dx7 is faster. The textures like walls and such are brighter. No weather effects = even more fps. Less effects. No shadows. Thats about it.

Dx9 = pretty much everything. Weather effects, all other effects. Shadows. Better texture quality and slightly different colors on some textures.

Right now I just use DX7 cause I hate the damn weather effects, that the game doesnt let you disable. Much higher fps.

Hope that helps.

well, its not a problem with hardware because ever other game i have works fine. maybe i will just try forcing DX7. i dont know what is going on with dx9.

If DX9 doesn't install correctly then there is a problem. You just got lucky with the other games I guess. There's no telling if there's instabilities in them you haven't noticed.

so, does anybody know what the exact problem with directx is? my computer was stable with an overclock, and now its probably 10x more stable without it. i was running 81.95 drivers, then i switched to 83.40 drivers, and now im at 81.98 drivers. doesnt seem to help. yes, i do have DX9.0c, and i also tried to install the latest version from microsoft;s site. but, i am getting the error mentioned in the OP.

just a dumb observation, couldnt you delete C:\WINNT\system32\DirectX\DX15.tmp\dsound.inf and try again?

Edit: renaming it is probably safer :)
