Orlando needs to keep him. Then in the summer, he goes to Dallas...with Deron...to be with Dirk...for the Triple D in Big D mashup.
The ONLY reason he is saying he wants to stay with the team for the rest of the season - is that if he gets traded to one of the teams he wants to go to - New Jersey or Dallas, for example - those teams will be gutted by having traded for him. If, however, he signs as a free-agent, then the Nets team can stay intact.
If I'm Orlando - unless I think they can win a championship this season - I'd trade him for the best offer I can get, and it would have to include multiple #1 picks.

Orlando needs to trade him now to get the best deal. The Magic are my team but they aren't going to win the title this year and if they don't trade Dwight before free agency they'll lose all bargaining power. No team that can win a title can afford him anyway so Dwight will end up on a mediocre team that will struggle. Hopefully he takes that into consideration.
I think he's going to end up on New Jersey or Dallas next season as a free agent, regardless of whether or not he gets traded.
What I don't get about him - why wouldn't he want to go to Chicago?
Chicago can offer Deng, Gibson, Noah, and a draft pick(s) for Howard and Turko -I don't see them getting a better package than that, and I don't see why Howard wouldn't want to play with Rose - but it seems he has no interest in that.

No, Dwight Howard absolutely has the right to negotiate and take a look and his option before he makes up his mind. He doesn't have to make any decision now just so the fans will be happy.
As long as he doesn't go on national TV and do a "The Decision" like LeBrick, he is fully within his right.

First, Dwight doesn't seem to be hiding his true intentions. He's commented on teams he would or wouldn't go to. Now it seems he is set on the Nets. Where is this info coming from if he isn't being somewhat open about it?
Second, he has a right to do what he wants, just as the teams have a right to make the moves they feel is best for the team. I hate the "loyalty" that fans expect from players, it's ridiculous.
Third, the Magic can't trade him for much right now. Dwight seems set on the Nets, so it would be a big risk to trade for him and hope that he extends. You have to factor in that a trade would piss him off and make him even less likely to sign.

How is this worse than LeBron? He's already said he has no interest in staying with the Magic at the end of the season, so it's on Orlando to decide on a fight vs. flight decision. I wouldn't have waited until the deadline to do something, though.
Hedo would be terrible in Chicago. Also, why would they get rid of Deng and his bloated contracted for another, less talented SF for more money? Hedo HAS to handle the ball, especially in crunch time - it's what made him so effective in Orlando before the big deal he signed.
He said he wants to be traded before the season started.

I really don't think he owes Orlando anything. Sure it'd be nice of him to let them know but Howard needs to look out for his best interests. The NBA is a cold league. Look no further than the Dallas Mavs. Team won a championship last year and they gutted the team and have basically decided that everyone but Dirk is expendable. JET and Kidd are in their last years of their contracts and it will be their last years in Dallas unless they decide to play for the minimum next year. It really pisses me off since these guys were huge in the mavs finally getting a championship. Terry especially. He was picked up after the Mavs lost Nash in free agency. He was ragged on because he could never live up to Nash even though a year or two later the Mavs were in the Finals. Something Nash could never do for the Mavs. Then Terry punked Lebron in last years finals. Terry deserves so much better than what little respect the Mavs have showed him. So now I'm to the point where players should look out for themselves.
Welcome to the NBA, my friend. Players don't care about winning, so it's more the money for them. Team's care about winning because it equals more money for them. As for Terry not living up to Nash, never heard that because of the fact Terry is a SG, not a PG. Harris was truly Nash's replacement.

Trust me. Terry was ragged on hard. He was the main ball handler for the first few years. He's always been a 1/2 combo. Avery Johnson did not trust Harris enough to hand over the keys. So much so Avery was a big part of the Harris for Kidd trade. Only when Kidd came over did the Mavs put Terry in the two guard spot permanently. Up until then they were using a Terry/Harris 1/2 combo with Terry seeing a majority of the ball handling.

at the end of the day, its still just a job. cant fault these guys for maximizing their earning potential.
If I were Orlando, I would keep him and let him walk at the end of the season. He will have to sign for 29mill less than he could with the Magic. Howard is hoping for a sign and trade at the end of the season so he can go where he wants and still make all the money.
He is a diva and loves the attention as much or more than Lebron did. He is not about winning or he wouldn't have declined to sign an extension with the Bulls(Orlando and Chicago had a trade in place, but Howard said he wouldn't extend with them). He wants to go to Brooklyn and be the big man and hang out with Jay-Z. He wants to be an entertainer as well.

Dirk Nowitzki. Didn't take a max contract from the mavs so they could sign more guys. I know the blonde bomber from the G is an exception in today's me me me sports world.
Duncan did the same thing. I'd also say that Kidd did it too when he resigned his last deal with Dallas.

Duncan and Nowitzki are pretty classy guys from what I know, so I'd say they are the exception to the rule. However, both are also nearing the end of their careers, they're in a much different position than someone in his prime.
Every year we see plenty of old veterans sign for significantly less money to play on a contender. But has there ever been a superstar player that's in his prime to do it?

You're right. The Nets(14-29) are on his list, but not the Bulls(35-9). He clearly wants to win a championship.....
