Yeah, I agree about the UI. There is an indy remake in the works called Gnomoria or something like that. I don't know how far they are. I believe their map sizes were much smaller, but it is in 3D (isometric view) and has much better interface (at least has mouse/menu access which alone is a HUGE improvement over memorizing keys and key-combos).

Also, I second the Lazy Newb Pack. Makes the game a lot easier to get into and fixes a lot of things that just didn't make sense. It also shows you some important stats on your dwarves so you know what their inclinations are in terms of jobs and can move them into more appropriate jobs based on their attributes that are otherwise hidden from you (but shouldn't be, such as strength, stamina, etc).

Gnomoria is nearly released. It isn't nearly as in depth or complicated as Dwarf Fortress though. I have a couple hundred hours on the game, and it is far more in depth than Banished. The UI is far superior to Dwarf Fortress, and while it does not have great graphics, the fact that it has any at all makes the graphics better than Dwarf Fortress.

Hmm, I decided I'd give Gnomoria a try (haven't put any time into yet though).

The last time I played Gnomoria, it was on an entirely different level as far as complexity and depth is concerned.

I'm not sure if that much has actually changed since then, but supposedly the combat and enemies are more differentiated and improved.

I should give it another go, though

It's still...complicated? Are the graphics improved at least?
It will always be complicated. And if by improved, you mean 'not ASCII art with the option of tilesets', then no. It's still the same, there.

As a bonus though, it's now got more features than ever, so it's technically more complicated.

IMO the The tilesets are a huge improvement over the pure ASCII graphics. There are tools out there to render it in 3D as well. I recall playing it on my eyefinity PC with 3 monitors. 1 screen was dwarf therapist, 1 screen was Stonesense, and then the center screen was the main view of the game with tileset graphics.

I created a goblin in adventure mode to role play as a baddie and it’s actually quite interesting with a vivid imagination

I think AI is pretty awful but the scope seems so crazy

Wow more features, game is crazy deep. I wish someone would make a mod for it after I learn to play that converts it to the Great Zork Underground :)

Tilesets?

You mean Stonesense?

Whoa amazing! I'll have to try playing again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SidMcnm8Ho

Looks like there's a crazy 3D mod in the works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxyQXE-HQtY

Neat little wiki with tons of mods listed: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Utilities

Tilesets, in general, convert the little ASCII art into some kind of bitmap or whatever, for improved visualization.
Turns this:

Into this:

There's a very extensive tileset community with tons of variations for different preferred styles. There's also an extensive modding community, with one of the best being Masterwork DF, which is kind of a TC/Major mod that changes how a heapful of the game's mechanics work, while still keeping the 'feel'. Also opens up playing as different races (elves, humans, etc) in different ways.

Stonesense is a different monster, gives the game a 3d visualizer. I don't know if you actually 'play' in Stonesense or if you just view your existing game in it, I've never used it.

Can anyone recommend a tile set?
If you download the Lazy Newb Pack, for whichever is the most recent version of DF, it generally comes with a configurator 9000 that'll let you look at and select a tileset that you like.

That should have the link in it (btw, those forums are a superb resource for stuff like this). Feel free to dig through there for other manual tilesets (very easy to install), mods, etc.

It's quite not user friendly still ...

lazy newb pack gives you a launcher ... and makes it less difficult ... but, it's still got a learning curve and requires a significant amount of mental energy to get started ....

Look guys, it took me god knows how long to learn to play Angband, maybe it's time to recognize that DF might be *too complicated* for some.

It is one of those games where it is all a foreign language and then it just clicks and you start trying to transport hell to the surface or creating weaponized mine cart rail guns. Honestly now I find myself purposefully screwing up otherwise there is no losing and losing is FUN!
