What's the difference between Tivo Basic and Tivo Plus?
http://customersupport.tivo.com/knowbase/root/public/tv1199.htm

can you get tivo basic on all of the tivo/dvr recorders?

i don't want to spend much $$$ was looking at ebay for one. i could just use a vcr but after decent quality cable and dvds, vhs looks like sh!t. the only thing i use a vcr for is my video surveillance system, which is a industrial time lapse unite and i am just recording black and white vide

Tivo branded recorders require a subscription. The Toshiba unit is one of the only devices that doesn't require a sub.

I bought the Toshiba SD-H400 from PriceGrabber.com since they are no longer sold in stores. I love the fact that it offers free tivo basic, that was my main reason for buying it.

Use old PC with a Hauppauge 150/250/500 card in it and BeyondTV as the software. If you have the old PC the other parts shouldn't be more than $200... maybe slightly more to get a big HD. You can record in MPG2 and then make DVDs with another piece of software.

Yes Toshiba SD-H400 and original ReplayTV 3060 (free lifetime subscription).

What's your price range? I'm thinking about selling my ReplayTV 3060 with NO MONTHLY FEES!

How about you make something clear - what is your definition of cheap?

as far as an old pc i will have a 1GHz Athlon w/ 384MB of ram soon available as i upgrae my wifes machine, and i could put either a 30 or 60GB hdd in it. i don't need a lot of recording time and will not use it except one would with a vcr to schedule it to record certain channels on days x,y and z and don't want to make dvds. but i would need a remote...

are there any free programs that will do this? that will run on win2k or xp?

Anyone wanna order one and have it sent to me ? ;)

I have satellite currently.
I don't need an additional box ?
I can just get signal and record and what not ?

I ran Beyond TV on win2k without major problem. You're going to be recording at sub-dvd watchable resolutions if you go with a software based card (I think happauge's hardware based ones cost at least $70) and you're going to have to fiddle with the resolution a whole bunch to not peg the cpu. I used a p3 1.1 ghz with 500 mb of ram for a long time with a software based card. If I had it to do over again I would have bought the hardware based encoding card right away and avoided all the diddling around.

1 last thing, are you wanting to watch and keep or just watch later ? in my experience, software based cards are going to record looking like a long-play vhs tape was used. The extra processing you can do with hardware based cards (which I use in my beyond TV box now) allows for a better picture to be recorded.

do you know if the 150 is a hardware based card? i don't know anything about these. also, it will be just to record now and then watch later. the tv is a 480i set and will use either rga or s-vhs to get back into the tv.

thanks for the info

What's your TV reception source?

If you have cable or satellite you should be ok. If you're using OTA antenna, that's another story.
