What's the difference between Tivo Basic and Tivo Plus?

Tivo branded recorders require a subscription. The Toshiba unit is one of the only devices that doesn't require a sub.

Use old PC with a Hauppauge 150/250/500 card in it and BeyondTV as the software. If you have the old PC the other parts shouldn't be more than $200... maybe slightly more to get a big HD. You can record in MPG2 and then make DVDs with another piece of software.

I ran Beyond TV on win2k without major problem. You're going to be recording at sub-dvd watchable resolutions if you go with a software based card (I think happauge's hardware based ones cost at least $70) and you're going to have to fiddle with the resolution a whole bunch to not peg the cpu. I used a p3 1.1 ghz with 500 mb of ram for a long time with a software based card. If I had it to do over again I would have bought the hardware based encoding card right away and avoided all the diddling around.
1 last thing, are you wanting to watch and keep or just watch later ? in my experience, software based cards are going to record looking like a long-play vhs tape was used. The extra processing you can do with hardware based cards (which I use in my beyond TV box now) allows for a better picture to be recorded.

how do those cards work? in the past i had a tuner card but i receive a ton of reception problems on the card, but a tv hooked up to the same line worked excellent.
