DVR solution togo

I have two video cards or more a pinnacle usb and a Happague 150 and neither seem to record in a manageable size to export to a portable usb HD.

I have tried using ORB, touched on Win Media Center, and I also have a Scientific Atlanta HD DVR (Comcast) that I cant seem to pull the movies off of up to this point.

Anybody have a solution to record a TV show and copy it to a size to take with them on a HD say like <1g per 1hr show without hrs of reconverting the file?

Love to hear ideas or other methods to do this, maybe buy a new DVR system and discard the 15$ a month fee i pay for the Sci Atlanta HD DVR (Comcast)

You might want to check out DivX 7.
What kind of system you got?

Windows MCE or XP i can reformat, i dont mind making a linux box but i want the files playable on VLC in windows.
