DVP5960 for $69.99 at Circuit City

Circuit City has the DVP5960 for only 69.99. Rumor has it that you can connect an external HDD to the usb port to watch divx movies.

Here is a link to the forum where members have attached a HDD.

does this dvd player support 720p or do dvds not even support 720p? im a little confused, in the ad it says it supports 480p

from what's been posted on that forum, "if Windows (My Computer) sees the device as a Hard Disk the 5960 will not read it, if Windows sees it as removable storage you are good to go"

i may have to pick one up 🙂

I wish they would make these things more compact. They're way to wide.

Anyway, an interesting dvd player with a unique feature.

DVDs are encoded at 480p. Some DVD players can upconvert to HD resolution (720p, 1080i) and do it better then your TV will. This player does have HDMI out, but I am not sure as to the quality.

Anyone know if this one will play an MP3 disc in shuffle mode? I have the DVP642, and it's great, but it will only play mp3's in sequential order. I want to make a 1000 song MP3 DVD, and put it on shuffle.

a little off topic but im interested in this dvd player to replace the dvp642... i have a sharp lcd tv and a 5.1 setup (no hdmi on receiver), if i get this, and hook up the hdmi to the aquos, can i still hook up an optical cable or whatnot to my receiver?

Does the DVP642 even play mp3-DVDs? I was under the impression that there were only a few DVD players that would even play mp3-DVDs.

yes, it will, but it has the amazingly stupid flaw of only playing them in sequential order! a really strange oversight.

bought one on tuesday, arrived today. also bought a hdmi to dvi cable which arrived today too. looks nice, very wide though, quality is good. tried the divx test disk, worked with everything but the hd divx, played the divx ultra star wars revelations movie fine with the menu

Does this unit do upconversion? I'm considering getting the new Oppo when it comes out, but this is less than half the price of the Oppo.

The new Oppo is out now but its only $50 cheaper than the older one. Plus, the quality I read isn't that great. Its really made to feed an external scaler.

Interesting question. It may possibly work as the video feed will go to your TV and the audio to your reciever. Admittedly, haven't tried it with this native HDMI player, but it seems to work fine with my friend's setup using an older Denon, with a DVI to HDMI conversion cable. I wonder if the audio is limited to one output, is seperated, or fed concomitantly through all outputs at the same time.

That said, I have the DVP642 and I've done exactly the same thing with the component output. Maybe somebody can try it out and report back!

MD.
