DVI to VGA Issues

I got a dvi to vga adapter made by Apple from Fry's yesterday and it seems to be working ok except for a few things.

Whenever XP loads, the monitor (i'm running dual on a Sapphire 9000 Radeon) that is on the dvi port fritzes really bad but then eventually settles down. It also does this when I click on "Advanced" under Display -> Settings.

Another thing that happens is that sometimes the monitor on the dvi port loads up with a skewed aspect ratio. Its weird.

Any ideas? Could this be a by product of 1) crap converter 2) overclocking 3) video card?

Oh yeah, one more question... what is going to have better quality... the vga standalone port or the dvi port that gets converted to vga? (I have both on this card).

Thanks

I don't think it's a factor of overclocking - overclocking related issues are mainly graphical artifacts on the screen (mostly by o/cing video memory) and instability.

it sounds like it's either the card or the DVI adaptor (or perhaps the driver even). I'd be skeptical of the Apple adaptor, only because I I read that apple didn't support a particular format awhile back (it was RGB 5/6/5, the usual 16-bit format on PC's. I highly doubt this is the issue, as it pertained to 16-bit and was awhile ago, but perhaps it's some other difference in the two platforms. Since they're so cheap, I'd probably look into getting a regular PC one or borrowing one from someone. Maybe the adaptor is just faulty...

Are you running dual monitors? If not, then there is no point in running the primary monitor on the DVI port (no quality benefit at all). Otherwise, try switching connections and run the second monitor on that port and the first on the VGA port and see if the problem persists.

It very well could also be the video card, some cards just do a degauss or change settings when you browse display properties, but I highly suspect the DVI-VGA converter.
