DVI to HDMI - No Sound - XFX 9600GSO DDR3

Hi, I have a XFX 9600GSO DDR3 384mb GPU (whilst waiting to upgrade) and i'm wanting to output video/audio to my HDTV which has one HDMI, VGA inputs, component and various other inputs etc.
The retarded GPU in question is:

Anyway, for the time being (before the upgrade of my pc) I'm wanting to be able to send video/audio over to my HDTV, obviously the best video option would be DVI - HDMI, but audio pass through isnt supported no the XFX 9600GSO as default, no?

Anyway, how did you get it working, or which video/audio option do you use.
I only require stereo audio...

My HDTV has a stereo miniplug for analog audio next to the VGA & DVI inputs, you might go the analog route and use 2 cables.

Older nvidia cards did not have their own sound chip, so you probably need to use the motherboard audio anyway.

You must use a SPDIF pass through cable.

You might be in luck. I remember 9600 was when nVidia started taking audio into consideration. You have to use a special cable to connect your motherboard's digital sound output to the card though assuming your particular card supports it. I believe it was up to the manufacturer to support the feature or not though.

At the time this was a large reason why I switched to a 4850 from an 8800 GTS 512 since the GTS didn't support hdmi sound.

A lot of 9600GSOs don't support the SPDIF pass-through. You might be out of luck.

The small white rectangular connector on the top left appears to be a SPDIF input. You need to find the motherboard SPDIF output and run a small cable to connect them. If you don't have a SPDIF cable you'll have to buy one separate.

This. Also the DVI->HDMI adaptor needs to support audio as well i know alot of the ones supplied with ATI cards do and the ones with Nvidia cards do not all the time so make sure the adaptor does support audio.

hook it up and see if it works. if it doesnt then ensure you are using a DVI to HDMI adaptor that works with audio.

Don't forget you'll have to switch your playback device in Windows Sound Properties to the appropriate source, most likely "digital output".

Edit: BTW the older type CD-ROM drives used to come with those two pin cables which would work too.

HDMI will carry DTS/DD just fine, but will depend if your motherboard will output these audio types over the internal spdif header.

With the HDMI cable. unless you mean your amp is audio only with no video switching section. In which case why are you botherwing with audio over HDMI anyways? just run the optical to the amp and the hdmi to the TV and call it a day.

Yeah that is what i later realized last nite after all this scrobbling lol, ill just buy a 15m optical cable when i buy a 15m dvi<>hdmi cable ....makes sense.
