DVI to Component adapter

Where a good place to get an adapter to go from DVI to Component. And are there different kinds of DVI ports?

I have a PC with a Matrox G450 card with a DVI slot on it. I've seen some adapters that specify they only work with ATI cards and things like that so I'm not sure exactly what I need to get.

The ATI adapters work because the specific cards they work with can be set to send a component signal out some of the DVI-I pins. An adapter to work with your card would have to be specifically designed to work with your card if it is capable of doing something similar.

DVI-I can easily be adapted to VGA or HDMI (same as DVI-D), but DVI-I to component is not as simple.

Beyond that, if you want to change it to a different connection you'll need to get a rather expensive box that does the conversion.

So I might not be able to get a converter for my particular card? What about DVI to S-Video or something like that? Or maybe I should just do VGA to S-Video/Composite because I do have a DVI -> 2VGA port splitter that I use currently.

Yeah, they might not make one. You could get a general converter / transcoder sort of device to do it, but it would be expensive and there might be quality loss.

S-video and composite are going to be significantly worse than DVI/VGA/Component.

What are you trying to do with it? What kind of display are you running to?

I have DIVX/AVI files of TV show son my computer and want to stick a PC by my TV and have it play those files so I can watch them on TV instead of having to watch them on the computer.

I might have a card with S-Video out built into it already but I can't find it so thought I might be able to just do it with a cheap-o adapter of some sort.

If the TV is just a regular SD one, then s-video should work fine.

I haven't tried looking for a standard sort of VGA to s-video adapter since I've never had to use one so I'm not sure on that.
