I just bought a 5900XT and it has one of those 15 pin to DVI converters. Should i use the it and run the monitor through the DVI or should i just leave it as is.

if you are running the crt monitor in your sig, then it wont make any difference. you will need the dvi=>vga adapter to get it to work though.
if you have a lcd (or other) digital input monitor with a dvi input, however, you can use the dvi connection to get improvement in picture quality, often it's quite significant.

To take advantage of the DVI connection the monitor needs to be DVI. If you just use the adapter to connect it it would make no difference in image quality.

Agree, however, when you add more cable/plugs, leaves open for loss of video quality, however some that may be. Use the HD15, its made for your CRT.

Do what he says ^^

If you are using a DVI--> DB15 converter, all you are doing is taking the analog signal in DVI-I and rerouting it to a DB15 connector. To take advantage of DVI, the monitor in use must accept a truely digital DVI-D connection and I don't know of any CRT monitor that does.

Well, some cards may have poor analog output via the DB15 ("VGA") connector, forcing you to use a DVI-DB15 adapter on the DVI port for better analog output. In most cases, though, you're probably better off with the simplest and shortest possible connection between two components, so I'd recommend you use the analog (VGA) connector for your analog CRT.

Hi,
I am attempting to attach my DVI-D monitor to an Analog Vga card (DB-15)
Is there a way to accomplish this?
The monitor cableis fixed and has a MALE (of course) DVI-D connector.
If possible please email me directly @ kurt@ibmmonitors.com.

Thanks in advance,
Kurt

The DVI plug carries the exact same analog signal as the 15 pin, plus the digital signal. The adapter just takes the analog and ignores the digital.

Some cheap monitors actually have a DVI plug on them, but only use the analog portion of the signal.

Personally, I use my 15 pin on my main monitor, and an adapter on my second plug so I can use two monitors ;)
