DVI LCD issues.. win XP

Hey.. I have my 17" LCD w/ DVI hooked up to my computer, along with my 17" CRT (via VGA).. I can't get the LCD to display anything with DVI input. It works perfect w/ vga input. When I try to "extend my desktop to this monitor", then hit apply, all it does is uncheck the checkbox.

I am running Win XP pro, a radeon 9800 pro, Acer AL1715 (17" lcd connected via DVI), and a Gateway EV700(17" CRT connected via VGA).

Any thoughts as to why this isn't working?

There might be an option on the LCD to turn it to the dVI input. look for one in its menus

there is, and I can only access it when the VGA input is connected. I switch it to DVI, it doesn't detect an input, so it switches back to VGA input.

I think by default it uses DVI, so if it detects a dvi signal it will switch to it

Moved the LCD upstairs and tried to use it with my father's computer - same issue. Checked the "extend desktop to this monitor" box, hit apply, it unchecked it for me. what the hell does this mean?

I also tried rebooting both computers with only the DVI input plugged in - still nothing displayed. When I plugged the VGA back in it was live.
