I'm buying an LCD monitor for the first time. It doesn't come with a DVI cable so I think I need to buy one. My question is when it come to DVI cable, do you get what you pay for or any cheap $10 cable will do?

The latter.

Don't buy into Monster Cable's Super Supreme Fiber-Injected Pixie Dust of Perfect Pwnage shielding BS.

there may be a .0000000000000003567% differance between the $10 cheapie and the monster cable, ahh, cable, but for some, that little diff is worth the $80+ price tag

Right...the signals are digital anyway, so why bother shielding? It takes a lot of noise to make a 0 look like a 1 and vv... 😉
An analogue connections however...

Ordered THIS DVI-D from monoprice.com monday got here today.

The cable is about half an inch thick it looks like and the quality looks great.
For $10.76 + $6 shipping it's a deal thats worth it.

Yeah, it's kinda like buying a super high end fiber optic cable. Sure you get a bit better transmission, but it is still just a 1 or 0. As long as the signal arrives; you're fine.

does the same logic apply to hdmi cables? i'm going to be setting up an lcd tv for hdtv and face the same question--get a servicable cable or a great cable.
