Dvi and vga

My monitor is a sony vga, my video card is a bfg 6800 that has both a dvi and a vga interface. I have a little adapter that has dvi on one end a vga on the other i wanted to see if i could tell the difference by plugging it into the dvi port. My screen say no video signal ive looked around to see if i need to manually set it but cant seem to find it. What am i doing wrong
