I am done renting DVD's via blockbu$ter etc..

Out of the last 8 DVD's I rented 4 of them went all digital(pixel scramble?)& 2 of them plain out froze.
I cleaned them inside to outside( the way I was told ) a few got past the part they pixel'd out on before but
started doining it again later. I have seen DVD freeze up because of a finger print, I mean come on now...
& I know its not the player cuz I cross ref them between 3 players.
The funny thing is most of them look ok to the eye & are new releases. So you would think they havent
had the time to get beat up yet? Then you tell the local renting establishment about them & they look @ you
as If you are tryn to scam them lol.

Anyway DVD's are way to fragil IMHO, they should figure out a thicker plastic coating or something.
Yes VHS loses quality over time , but DVD's lose quality way faster if handled like a regular CD.
Puting them in & out of there case is a art I guess?

Is it do to the more compact laser burning that they suck so bad?:)

I rent tons of DVDs and rarely have a problem with freezing. Must be because I have a REALLY cheap DVD player.

I think a better question is why people don't take care of things that don't belong to them? I've rented DVDs before, and most of them are horribly scratched. I own a ton of DVDs (and CDs too for that matter) and not one of them is scratched like that.

People are just clutzes/slobs or they do it on purpose... one or the other (or both).

Tapes wear out from being played too many times. That excuse doesn't work for DVDs... any problems with them are due to scratches caused by abuse/neglect/accident.

But I should add that my DVD players rarely choke on the scratches. I am amazed actually that they have the ability to "see" past surface scratches as well as they do.

I've never had any problems with my dvd's. Of course, I most often play 'em on my computers. The only dvd-player I have for my tv is my ps2, and the dvd's I've played on that worked fine.
You must be unlucky, I handle my dvd's just as I handle my cd's (careful not to get scratches on 'em, etc.), but I'm not especially careful either.

I'm as lucky as luv2chill, whenever I have a disc (both cd and dvd) my dvd-drives will often read it without problem, also when other peoples cd-rom drives won't.

you couldnt of said it better chill:)

I mean I rented ghost world a day after it was in & it was already mangled lol.
I guess I will start getting my rentals from the little momNpop places ( if I can find anymore lol).
They would probably check there dvd's before renting them out to have a angry customer.

of course that could be because i have a VERY CHEAP GE dvd player.

I've been renting DVDs for 1.5 years instead of VHS. In this time I've had two that required me to remove the DVD and clean it myself with a tissue and breath. After that no problems.

that depends a lot on the dvd player too. some are just way better at reading and ignoring small error like the little scratches and dust.
get a better dvd player. i've not had any problems with mine renting from blockbuster and anywhere else.

its not the dvd's fault. its the fault ever every stupid fscking joe six pack who rents dvd's from blockbuster and doesn't understand that YOU CAN'T TOUCH THE BOTTOM OF THE DVD. this has happened to me 3 times.

I've never had one problem playing a cd from Blockbuster. Of course they are all scratched but it doesn't seem to affect the playback at all (maybe because my DVD player is over $300?). Even if I was to get a bad one all you gotta do is tell them it wouldn't play and they will give you a refund.

Man, I've got the special CD/DVD cloth for cleaning, and it works great on both.

My DVD Player is over two years old (SONY) and it works perfectly. I even used to rent from NetFlix (you wanna talked about some fvcked up DVD's), and still didn't have any problem. I don't blame blockbuster for being a hardass about the DVD's being busted. I'm sure that they get Fvcked up stuff all the time. Plus, like someone else said, people don't take care of crap, especially crap that's not theirs. I mean, how many people you know that got a $40 charge on their accoutn because blockbuster caught them returning a screwed up DVD/VHS?

You got a bad player then (or you didn't know what you were doing). Panasonics, even their very old models from back in '97, are some of the most reliable when it comes to reading dvd's!

As for you meaty, you must have bad luck...but you should know better than to rent at blockbuster. 99.9999% of the renters there are idiotic joe six-packs who probably use them as coasters. Your dvd player must also suck because almost any semi-recent player can overcome minor scratches with ease.

I've never had a single problem with a dvd and I own almost 90 and have rented at least 2 dozen.

the cheaper the dvd player the better, espicially those apex dvd players
quality aside, they play damn near every kind of disc and handles scratched/dirty disc very well
thats probably because apex is a chinese company, in china 99 percent of movies are pirated, these players are designed to handle crappy quality discs and good error correction
