Any new apps (free) to replace DVDshrink? I use AnyDVD in the background for decoding and then DVDshrink to remove menus, etc. Some recent Sony DVD's crash DVDShrink. I tried nero recode but its not as good as DVDshrink.

You use RipIt4Me in combination with DVDShrink to get around that. Works flawlessly for me.

Alternatively, you could use DVDFab Decrypter to make a file rip that will not trip up DVD Shrink.

RipIt4Me - Uses DVDDecrypter and DVDShrink. I've yet to see a DVD that it can't rip that DVD Decrypter or DVDShrink had problems with.

Take the DVD back and get an exchange. Isn't the problem that Sony is intentionally putting errors on the discs to cause problems? Sure they won't give you your money back even though the product is technically faulty, but if they have to replace enough discs, the cost may cause them to change their minds about bad copy protection schemes.

RipIt4Me in conjuction with DVD Decrypter and FixVTS.

Then, at least for me, it's WinAVI converter to change .avi to DVD.

Then DVD Shrink.

Then just prior to burning I usually defrag the folder containing the DVD files. I defrag just the folder, not the entire drive. Only takes a moment. This is probably unnecessary, but it seems to result in fewer bad burns & useless coaster disks.

Tried DVDFab Decrypter for awhile, didn't like it. Went back to RipIt4Me + Fix VTS.

Edited to respond to SoulAssassin's post below.

The drive should be fast enough to supply data even if it's highly fragmented. It probably signifies another underlying problem. You could also try burning at a slower speed which could be faster than waiting to defrag the whole drive..

OK, so I guess there are ways to get new DVDs into DVDShrink but no one has written a better app to re-author DVD's and save them as ISO's.

I tried Nero recode but its re-authoring tools to eliminate menus and previews are weak compared to DVDShrink. Recode also can't natively save to ISO format.

I'm also looking at CloneDVD (not free), it seems to be about the same as DVDShrink, but it has a cheesy interface. Also one annoyance, it makes you name the ISO file where DVDShrink just gives the file the same name as the volume title of the original DVD.

Any other commercial re-authoring apps worth looking at? I convert all my kids' stuff to ISO's for my HTPC. A lot of the kids stuff has 4 20 minute shows on one DVD. DVDShrink makes it easy to keep the 4 main shows and eliminate all menus and previews.

DVDFAB Platinum can handle the Sony DVD with no problems
and you get a choice of wether or not to keep the menu when
you use it to make a copy ... the developer iis constantly makling
updates to account for changes in anticopy measures
It is not free, but it does come with Free Lifetime Upgrades

One thing I found about DVDFAB and CLONEDVD is that they both write out the DVD files to a temp directory before wrinting the ISO. DVDShrink does this in one step.

Interestingly, the whole RipIt4Me.org website has vanished today.

It was there last night. Today, poof!

I checked a couple of alternative download sites & RipIt4Me is gone from them too. The plot thickens . . .

Edit: I found a site that still has it called freewarefiles.com. If you want the program, maybe you'd better make haste to download it now.

Is everyone really that far behind? RipIt4Me no longer uses FixVTS!
RipIt4Me 1.70 no longer needs FixVTS installed, contains some changes that should result in less players balking at the removal of small cells, offers to switch back to full movie mode if an episodic disc is detected and the mode has been set to movie only and there are some other minor improvements and bugfixes.

And Doom9.net has the word on RipIt4Me.

RipIt4Me appears to be the latest software to fall victim to the entertainment industry's crackdown on our rights - the site went down an April 1st, and statements by the admin of Digital Digest seem to confirm that RipIt4Me is no more. So here's my plea to those who write software: even if you don't want to release your source code, please make sure that in case something happens there's a way that development can continue. I'll gladly offer to hold sources for safe keeping so that in case something happens the software can continue to live as open source.
That's really sad about RipIt4Me. :(

RipIt4Me can generate an ISO using DVDDecrypter and then launch DVDShrink to burn it. The combination provides the most features by far. Almost the only other program needed is ImgBurn (the legal successor to DVD Decrypter) to use the build IO and batch features.

No. I did a fresh download of RipIt4Me from their home site last night, so it was still up as of
8Apr07.

I have another use for FixVTS not connected with RipIt4Me, so I still find it useful.

If someone has an .AVI file and converts it to DVD, the FixVTS can be run on the converted file before it is burned to DVD.

Ripit4me is definitely what I'd recommend too. I used it to make a back up of Casino Royale. Worked like charm.
