Is there a cd ripping program like Alcohol 52% only free?

Also, just as doom9.org is a great site for dvd, is there a great site and forum for ripping CDs?

I've been reading this thread and thought I'd try out DVD Shrink. It works nicely. I was able to backup my DVD to my HD, but when I went to do the actual backup to a blank DVD disc, I got a window that said I could either get the latest version of Nero (with link to the Nero website) or back it up to my HD.

I have Nero 5.5.1.3 but DVD Shrink would not recognize it. I even tried to use the demo version of Nero 6.2.3? but as the install for the demo started, it tried to remove my original Nero (I figured I would reinstall it later from my original disc if I needed to), I got an error message - something about a line of code improperly listed. And nothing happened.

How did you get DVD Shrink 3.1.2 to find Nero 5.5?

In DVDShrink try the menu EDIT|PREFERENCES\FILE I/O and make sure "Enable burning with nero" is checked. If it is well... ? Update nero like mechwarrior said.

Thanks for the tips guys. I will down load the update for my 5.X Nero and also see if I can set the preferences in DVDShrink to get thru this.

Thanks OP for the posting and to you all for the tech assist!

CDex works well for me for ripping CDs. I'm not sure about sites/forums for ripping CDs, it's a heck of a lot simpler than ripping DVDs.

I think this new version is great. Instead of choosing the re-author method I prefer to simply remove all the files except the movie and re-create IFO files using IFOEdit and then open DVD Shrink. Using this method you can choose which audio track you want instead of the default track used by choosing the re-author method. It's slower than DVD2ONE but works well, and it's free.

Thanks to Mechwarrior and MrBass for their tips. I found that my Nero was enabled, but not updated. DVDShrink found Nero after I updated the software. However, I found that my version of Nero which came from a Mitsumi CD-RW deal I found here a couple of years ago, is a special one that came w/the RW drive and is coded only for Mitsumi drives and will not work on my Lite-on 811S (another deal I found from here!).

I tried to use MrBass's suggestion of using AutoIso3.1 and DVDdecrypter but I don't think I have any DVD writing software that will work. My Liteon came with something called SonicDVD, but nothing that any of the decrypting files can find.

When I tried to use AutoISO, it created the ISO, on the HD but did not write to the DVD-RW drive.

I know this isn't the right forum, but with all the experts reading thru this thread, it was my best hope.

Appreciate any help that can be rendered.

Thx

Can someone help me really quick:

I would like to know if I could keep the 5-channel audio (as opposed to the 2-ch track) only and still have it play fine on my crappy TV speakers, just in case I decide to get a stereo system in the future to enjoy the true 5-ch sound?

Thanks MrBass,

I d/led DVDdecrypter, but when I went to use it, it would only write ISO's to my HD. (Maybe I need to re-read any docs on the program). I only have one DVD drive on my system, and its also the DVD-RW drive. So I can't put in my DVD and then have DVDDecrypter read it and decrypt it to the DVD-RW drive.

Sorry if I'm being a real noob about this. When I ran DVDDecrypt, I could not get it to open the ISO that I made with AutoIso3.1 and burn that onto my blank DVD.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong. But I greatly appreciate the tips.

Mindstorm, I had the same question and only copied the 5.1 sound. It played just fine on my two speaker stereo TV. Hope this helps.

3.1.4 download and guide

Version 3.1.4 - 25 Jan 2004
---------------------------

Booktype DVD-ROM is checked by default, disabled if unsupported.

Fixed bug where deep analysis could still be forced on.

Added preferences option for "built-in software renderer" which solves video preview problems on some systems.

Preview window now tries to play only audio streams which are available in a title.

Changes to file reading code, can enable overlapped I/O and specify read block size by options in preferences.

Automatically stop video preview when using Start/End control in re-author mode.

Fixed problem of incorrectly reported burning speeds.

Prefix drive letter to list of available burning devices.

Fixed bug where analysis results file could be saved to the wrong filename after "deep analysis before backup", so the results were not cached when opening the same DVD a second time.

Some performance improvements, analysis and encoding approx. 6% faster on test systems.

(and Madalien)

Yes, just keep the 5.1 Dolby. However, do not just keep DTS.. if you do this, you will not get a 2-ch track and would need a DTS decoder to get any sound

One problem with CloneDVD is with certain movies which require no compression after stripping out some extras Clonedvd will still compress it (the movie).

If you have a 1-layer DVD(<4.7GB), then use Mode>ISO>Read that will save a copy on your Hard Drive. Then to burn it, chose Mode>ISO>Write. DVD Decrypter can burn ISO images.

mrbass,

When I go to the link on your sight for the new version, I get a quick webpage that says something akin to :

OOPS, OOPS, No hotlinking allowed

And then it dumps me back to your webpage.

Strange... I don't use any download managers, just IE. Here's what I get now:

www.mrbass.org homepage (redirects in 10 seconds automatically)

Unauthorized download

External Hotlinking is no longer allowed

Don't right click to save file

Don't use download managers

Disable software firewall

Allow your browser to send referrers.

Still can't figure it out see doom9's leech page for more suggestions.

Any ideas?

Wierd!

Joe
