I got a $75 GC to Amazon.com and I have some extra money laying around that I'm going to use to buy some DVDs. I wanna hear your suggestions as to DVDs I should buy. Right now my DVD collection is very small (about 7) and I'm trying to expand it.

Any suggestions? And also, any sites that keep up on the good deals/coupons, etc? (other than dvdtalk.com?)

Thanks

The Gladiator - taken off list..
Saving Private Ryan

I know it's a bit ridiculus, but if I had the money, I'd get the Friends collection with all the shows on DVD. :D

Well seeing as you've got some big bucks to spend, how about some Criterions? My fav is Brazil, but Seven Samurai and Rushmore are tied for second.

Barring that, you can't go wrong with some classic comedies--Dumb & Dumber, Ferris Bueller, Office Space, Friday, Happy Gilmore (unfortunately only P&S), Billy Madison...

Some of the more offbeat items in our collection are

Monty Python's Flying Circus (either the first or second season... it's got The Spanish Inquisition on it)

Underdog (Yes, the cartoon. :) )

Twelve Monkeys (you MUST have this!)

Lonesome Dove (oh man is that good!)

West Side Story (bite me)

All of the Alien series.... In space, no one can hear you scream!

We have quite a few now, actually. It becomes an addiction.

Emphatic second for 12 Monkeys... it is a definite must. Also Se7en and Fight Club if you like Fincher's style.

Are you a PT Anderson fan? Then the 2-disc sets of Boogie Night and Magnolia are awesome.

I love Kubrick but I can't recommend his box set--mediocre at best (I can say that because I do have it). All of those movies will be rereleased eventually, so I'd hold off on that.

Are you a Bond fan? All of those discs rock.

Depends what you're looking for Konichiwa. If you have a nice home theatre setup and are looking for something to show off your system, here's a couple MUST HAVE titles.

Fight Club (easily the most impressive movie on DVD, both audibly and visually)
Saving Private Ryan (as others have said, very impressive)
Das Boot
Jurassic Park/Lost World DTS collection

There's a couple to get you started. If you want movies that are just 'good' well.. I think our taste in movies differs a little, I've seen a couple of your other posts and I'm not much of the 'eccentric' type if you will.

I had several interesting DVDs before about $1000 worth of my home theatre equipment (DVD player, DD/dts receiver, a couple of speakers, ALL of my DVD movies) got LOOTED from my apartment in a break-in. God, I'm surprised my computers are still here!

Anyway, here are some of the must-own DVDs IMHO:

American Beauty (GREAT movie; it's so true to life)
Fight Club (really shows off your home theatre equipment)
Jurassic Park & Lost World Collection (another marvel in digital sound)
Matrix (albeit an overrated movie amongst techno geeks; shoot me, but it is!)
Office Space (one of my personal survival guides :) )
Saving Private Ryan (the dts version ROCKS)
Sound of Music (silence......this is a great classic musical)

The list can go on and on....these were the ones that I came up with off the top of my head.

Do you have a Dolbiy Digital or DTS setup?

if so get ID4 (movie isn't great but the sound effects are)

other than that...

The Patriot
Platoon

And a vintage John Woo flick... not all that in the sound and special effects... but it has some stunts that gives the matrix a good run for it's money... Hard Boiled

Fight Club is amazing on DVD.
X-Men was pretty impressive.

Like anime at all? Serial Experiments Lain on DVD (4 disk set) or Key the Metal Idol (3 disk set) :)
